VALDOSTA— The Loco Raiders, a youth travel football team, are gearing up for a series of championship games on Nov. 3. 

Since its establishment last year, the team has rapidly expanded and now offers age divisions ranging from 8U to 13U, with a strong drive to win titles. The Loco Raiders originally began as the South Georgia Crimson Raiders in the Pop Warner league last year. The first season proved to be highly successful, with three teams — 8U, 10U, and 12U — competing.

The 8U team advanced to the conference championship, facing only one loss that season, which occurred in the championship game. The strong first season motivated the team to keep building, and the Raiders became the Loco Raiders, ready to establish themselves in their community.

The president of the Loco Raiders is Josh Harvey-Clemons, a former player for the Washington Redskins. He grew up playing in Lowndes County, and this team represents a chance to give back to his roots and shape a new generation of local athletes.

Clemons played football at the Boys and Girls Club, a cherished part of his childhood that he recalls as “really exciting.” From there, he moved on to play for Lowndes High School before earning spots at the University of Georgia and the University of Louisville, eventually playing four years in the NFL. 

Clemons is supported by key community members, like Wes and Rosie Simpson, who all help the Loco Raiders thrive. 

“There are a lot of different people who play big roles in this and help make it run smoothly,” stated Clemons.

Four of the five teams in the Loco Raiders program clinched top rankings in their division this season. The Loco Raiders’ 8U team took a big win in playoffs to join the rest of the teams for the championship games on Sunday.

But Clemons believes that the Loco Raiders’ purpose goes beyond the scoreboard. 

“Our goal is for these kids to grow into great adults, whether they go into sports or any career,” Clemons explained. 

The team has been playing their home games at Lowndes Middle School, where Clemons himself once played. As the Loco Raiders head to the championship at Lowndes High, Clemons finds special meaning in seeing his players on the same field where he once competed. Watching them follow in his footsteps strengthens their commitment to the journey, showing them that hard work can open doors.

This championship is more than just a game for Clemons and the Loco Raiders. It’s a chance to show how much can be achieved with teamwork, commitment, and support from their hometown. The championship games will be hosted at Lowndes High School’s football stadium.
