Daniel Curtis “Danny” O’Neal, 56, of Lake City, Florida, passed away Wednesday evening, Feb. 20, 2008 at Haven Hospice of Suwannee Valley, Lake City, Florida following a lengthy illness. Danny graduated from Branford High School Class of 1969. He was currently employed by the Florida Department of Corrections and had served as a reserve officer for the Columbia County Sheriff’s office for a number of years. His fondest memories were of his involvement with the Columbia County FFA instilling his love of the land and animals to another generation, participating in antique tractor shows and participating for many years as a re-enactor in various Civil War festivals across the country and being an extra in the movie “North and South.”

He was preceded in death by his father, Curtis O’Neal and his mother and stepfather, Elias “Pop” and Elsie Mae Waldron, two sisters, Anita Porter and Fern Bowen and his grandfather, the Rev. Raymond Roberts, long time minister of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Sandra; his son, Aaron O’Neal (Amanda); three grandchildren, Cyera, Kaley and Whitney O’Neal.; his special “brothers,” Pat Haygood, Ron Chambers and Duane Soride; mother-in-law, Blanche Strickland of Starke, Florida, sisters-in-law, Betty Holliday, Susan Ourso (Larry), Celia Douberly (Charles), all of Lake City, Florida; aunts, Jeanette and Ouida O’Neal; uncle, Russell Sutton; and cousins, Linda DuBois, Janet Smith, Vivian Lauremore, Sandra VonKoos, Tommy, Roger, Gene, Ricky and Sonny O’Neal, Jimmy, Phil, Randy and Lawana Sutton, Kathleen Burnsed, Sheri Flag and Barbara Bryant, all of Daytona Beach, Florida.

Memorial services for Danny will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 1 at the Pine Grove Baptist Church on U.S. 441 North in Lake City, Florida with Pastor Charles Knight and Pastor Lewis Daniels officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Haven Hospice of the Suwannee Valley, 6037 US 90 West, Lake City, FL 32055.
