VALDOSTA— One month after Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact, FEMA’s stance is that it will remain committed to supporting recovery efforts in Valdosta for as long as needed.
James Wood, a public affairs specialist for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, assures residents that the agency is fully committed to providing long-term aid, with plans to remain in the area as long as needed.
“Our motto is ‘helping people before, during, and after disasters’,” Wood emphasized. “We are here as long as it takes. As long as the state requires us to be here, we will continue to assist them with whatever needs they may request of us.”
In addition to providing immediate assistance, FEMA has partnered with local nonprofits, including the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army, to ensure comprehensive aid across the affected areas.
FEMA actively encourages residents to apply for disaster assistance. According to Wood, this process is essential for unlocking further resources. Wood referenced that many applicants and affected parties have felt overlooked or expressed frustration at initial denials.
After receiving a denial letter from FEMA, Woods states that applicants should carefully read through the entire document to understand the reasons for the denial. Each application is reviewed based on individual circumstances, so an initial denial may simply mean that more information is required.
For those in Valdosta, FEMA encourages people affected by the disaster to keep track of application deadlines, which vary depending on specific disaster timelines. While each disaster requires a separate application, Wood urges survivors to view FEMA’s determination letters as part of the larger process rather than a final decision.
Above all, Wood highlighted FEMA’s steadfast commitment to the region. “For Helene, we’re not going anywhere. We have the resources and supplies to ensure that every survivor’s needs are met,” stated Wood. “We just want people to know that they are not alone throughout this process.”
FEMA has set up an in-person assistance location at 4434 N. Forrest St. Extension. The site is open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. This location provides those in need with an opportunity to sit down, receive help, and understand the process from someone who cares.
