The Bible says, “As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him” (2 Sam.22:31). A medium is something that has a middle position, halfway between two things. Some people when they see the word medium, think of the necromancer (De.18:11) that person who claims to deliver messages from the spirit world to earth. But the message isn’t from a departed loved one but from a demon of hell. And they use words for delivering that message. When God created this universe, words were the medium through which His work was done. “God hung the universe with words. Everything you will ever see, touch or taste had its genesis in a word from God.” Words were the medium used by God to communicate His will to man. It’s still the medium by which He communicates His will to man today; it’s called the Word of God, the Bible. Truth as well as lies are communicated with words. Words were the medium that Satan used to get Eve to sin and then Eve used words to get Adam to sin. Ideas are received into our heart through our physical senses of seeing and hearing. We either read words or we hear words and decide to accept them and act upon them or not. The words we read and hear should be tried – “For the ear trieth (to test, investigate, examine, prove) words, as the mouth tasteth meat” (Job 12:11, 34:3). In other words we must do our homework and determine if what men are saying is true, but, – “The simple believe every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going” (Pr.14:15). Even John warns us against believing every preacher, – “Beloved believe not every spirit, (person) but try (test, prove, examine) the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (I Jn.4:1ff). Words are tested by comparing them with the Word of God. If words contradict the Word of God then they should not be received into our hearts. The words of politicians should be tested to see if they align with reality. Their words should be held long enough for the sugar coating to melt off and we see what their words really mean. Our thoughts are invisible to other men. If they weren’t we would have no need for words. But since they are we use words as a medium to communicate the thoughts in our heart to their heart. Jesus is the medium “The Word” through which the invisible God revealed Himself to man (Jn.1; Col.1:15). In communicating our thoughts we “try” the words we use to determine if they accurately express our knowledge, understanding and feelings. People use this process whether they’re telling the truth or a lie. Thank God that in a world full of lies we have the Truth, the Word of God, that has stood the tests of time (Ps.12:6, 18:30).
