JENNINGS — The pastors, Connie and Armando Sosa of Tabernacle of God’s Love hosted an event called, “Back to School” on Saturday. The main goal was to give backpacks, school supplies, clothes, haircuts, physicals and shots to students.
“This is what we do every day of the year. It just so happens to be on a larger scale today. We get phone calls, we get word of mouth that there is a family that needs food. There is a family that needs help,” Pastor Connie Sosa said. “Same thing we hear of a family that has fallen on bad times and they need help. We’re there, so whatever we can do to help we do.”
The Florida Department of Health and Shepherd’s Hands Clinic gave out free physicals and shots to any child who still needed them for the upcoming school year. From Hamilton County Health there was Dr. Malik and Director of Nursing Marjorie Ridgon; Administrator for Columbia County Health Department Mark Lander; and RN Shan Keyda Jones-Simmons and HST Nina Concepcion.
The whole event was for the kids and a way to offer any help that families in Jennings needed. There were tables piled with free clothes and buckets full of different sized shoes. A tent held a table with boxes loaded with backpacks for the kids. Corinth Baptist Church in Jasper, was in charge of the backpacks for kids, which resulted in having close to 500 backpacks for kids. Pastor Gary Abott and his congregation collected a generous donation of 300 backpacks from a church in Tallahassee, as well as money to buy school supplies to fill the backpacks.
In December, there will be another large scale event called, “Happy Birthday Jesus.” The event will be exactly like this past event, but will consist of winter items. The date will be around the middle of December and will be finalized soon. The Back to School, event handed out all of the clothes and shoes that were donated.
