Softball tournament strikes out cancer

LIVE OAK —  Five teams joined together Saturday at First Federal Sportsplex for a softball tournament to raise money for childhood cancer research.

Over $3,500 was raised for the first CURE Childhood Cancer-Pediatric Research Tournament.

Cason Amerson got the tournament started with the first pitch. Cason, 10, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at age 6. He is now considered a stable cancer patient.     

Play began a little after 8:30 a.m. and finished around 8 p.m. as rain held off until after the last out.

The teams that competed were: The Misfits, The Kings, Fullhouse, The Unknown and The Brown Brothers Team.

The winning team was The Kings. They took home championship t-shirts donated by Wade and Karen Skinner. 

Jonathan Dupree won the home run derby. 

Volunteers for the tournament were: Darrell Curls, Cricket Watley and family, Casey Sweat, Dewayne Miller, Jacquelyn Watson and family, Dwain Skinner and family, Wanda DeJournette, Gail Dallas, Shannon Daniel, Wendy Lashley and family, Hank Lloyd and Keerston Skinner.

Suwannee County Sheriff candidates Matt Smith, Halford Harris, Sam St. John, Buddy Williams, Shawn Hingson and Fred Martin also volunteered at the event.
