LIVE OAK, Fla. — Suwannee High alumni, current SHS varsity players and local soccer players met on Saturday to participate in the third annual Steve Claffey Memorial Tournament.

The event was played in the memory of the late Steve Claffey, a Suwannee Middle School teacher and soccer coach who passed away in 2013 at the age of 45.

In the first game, local team Dortmund defeated an SHS alumni squad 2-1. The Suwannee varsity squad won the second game 5-4 against SHS alumni.

The event raised $1,650 for the Torres family for medical expenses.

“The Claffey Memorial game was created to help promote soccer and unity within the Suwannee County community while representing a coach who gave so much,” said Cameron Hall, one of the organizers of the event.

“It’s been our family’s privilege to host this event and give back to the community that accepted us with open arms. We are very appreciative of all the fans who have come out the past three years to support the event.”
