Final Spirit of the Suwannee talent show winners chosen

LIVE OAK, Fla. — After three preliminaries at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, 12 contestants and three wild card winners have been chosen for the finals of the You Can be the Star talent contest. Sondra Hunt (Lake Butler), Bryan Johnson (Live Oak), the duo of Karley Scott Collins & Alex Sandlin (Lake City) and Kelby Shea Cornman (Jacksonville) were the winner of Friday night’s third and final preliminary. Katrina Alexus, 13, (Jacksonville) was the wild card winner Friday.  The four winners will move to the Sept. 9 finals to compete for the $5,000 prize with previous winners Joshua Edwards (High Springs), Brittanie Powell, (Live Oak), Reginald Stacy (Bronson), Hallie Davis (Jasper) and wild card winner Sadie Miller (Branford) from the first preliminary; and Alyssa Gregory (St. Marys, Ga.), Kara Orndorff (Jasper), Hillary Bailey (Macclenny), Jessica Stewart (Jacksonville) and wild card winner Kassidy Kolwyck (McAlpin) from the second prelim. The four winners brought outstanding performances to the Music Hall stage Friday.  Now, it’s on to the Sept. 9 finals at the SOSMP where this contest is expected to continue each year in the future, expanding into many other states to seek talent. The last preliminary contest saw 11 contestants striving with every bit of talent they had to move to the finals. In addition those moving forward, other contestants were Pure Joy, a delightful duo of sisters Alice and Joy Geiger (Wellborn), accomplished country artist Ashley Holbrook (Orange Park), competition newcomer Taylor Smith (Jasper), the energetic Baker Country Cloggers (Macclenny), talented singer Callie Leigh Johns (Jacksonville) and longtime artist Ariel Ratliff (Live Oak).

 

Georgia College softball slow pitch tournament Sept. 15

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — The Georgia College softball program will host a one-pitch slow-pitch tournament at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, with proceeds benefitting the Bobcat softball program.The event will be held at the Walter B. Williams Fields off Ga. Route 22 in Milledgeville with a $300 entry fee per team. Georgia College softball student-athletes and staff will be on hand to run the event, and Down 2 Earth Sports out of Baxley will be selling softball equipment, bats, gloves, apparel and much more.Participants can look for extra raffles and giveaways from Down 2 Earth throughout the night. Suspect trips while running from police

MOULTRIE, Ga. — A trespassing suspect who tried on Friday morning to outrun a Moultrie police officer lost the race for a wooded area when his own foot tripped him up. Police were dispatched at about 9:25 a.m. to the 20 block of Regency Village Drive to investigate a complaint. An officer saw a man identified as Nigel Akese Murray inside a residence trying to open a rear window. Murray came outside after the officer ordered him to come out with his hands up. After the officer told the man not to run, he looked at the officer and decided to take his chances running toward the wood line. “The offender tripped over his foot and landed on his stomach,” police said. Murray told the officer he had a weapon on his side, and police recovered a knife with a blade of nine to 10 inches in length. Murray, 23, 823 Seventh Ave. S.E., was charged with criminal trespass and duty to obey police officer.

ABAC Performing Arts Series Kicks Off Season September 24

TIFTON, Ga— Symphonies, jazz, and dramatic performances are all included in the eight events of this year’s ABAC Presents! Performing Arts Series at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. ABAC Arts Connection Director Wayne Jones said the theme for this year’s series is “Ignite.” The 2017-18 series kicks off with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra on Sept. 24 at 3 p.m. at the Tift County High School (TCHS) Performing Arts Center.  The symphony will feature violinist Corinne Stillwell performing Alexander Glazunov’s haunting violin concerto. Tickets for the entire series are $80 for adults and $25 for students under 18 years of age.
