VALDOSTA — Artist David Bechler presents canvases as bold as nature.

A Valdosta State University biologist, Bechler brings a design eye to the natural world.

“Personally, for me, art is an emotionally pleasing experience, and the production of a piece of art work is a time of relaxation during which I experiment with different media and subject matter,” Bechler says in an artistic statement. “When producing my own artwork, I explore the use of various media so as to combine my interest in abstraction with my love of the natural world.”

His fascination with nature, Bechler attributes to beginning as a 4-year-old catching a snake in Chicago. As the youngster’s interest in nature and science developed, so did his appreciation for art.

His mother was an art collector. His wife, Marilyn, is an art teacher with the Lowndes County school system.

Currently, Bechler works primarily in acrylics, but he also works in pencil, watercolors, batik and dyes.

He is December’s Southern Artists League Artist of the Month. His work is on exhibit in the lobby of The Valdosta Daily Times’ 201 N. Troup St. offices.
