VALDOSTA — The Chamber of Commerce hosted Valdosta’s National Small Business Week kickoff event Monday, marking the beginning of a celebration dedicated to entrepreneurship and the remarkable success of small businesses.
The event brought together local business owners, community leaders, and supporters to honor small businesses’ role in driving economic growth and innovation in Valdosta.
As the event unfolded, attendees were treated to networking opportunities and discussions highlighting the strength and achievements of small business owners in Valdosta. The Chamber took this opportunity to recognize the hard work, dedication, and creativity of entrepreneurs who have contributed to the vibrancy of the local economy.
Christie Moore, president and CEO at Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, grabbed the crowd’s attention to officially start the kick-off ceremony. After greeting the attendees, Moore discussed the importance of small business owners and the week-long event before giving the spotlight to DeWayne Johnson, president and CEO of Southern Georgia Black Chambers.
Johnson talked about the impact of events such as National Small Business Week.
“This week, we recognize the innovation, resilience, and determination of our small business owners, who are really the backbone of our local economy,” stated Johnson.
A young entrepreneur stepped up to talk to the crowd about her business and journey. Through a school program called FLEX, Kayla Calloway has been following her dreams of entrepreneurship with her facial soap company. The Foundational Leadership and Entrepreneurship Experience program (FLEX) got Calloway her start in entrepreneurship. She competed in the Georgia FLEX competition, taking first place and receiving thousands of dollars for her business.
FLEX is an entrepreneurship program for high school students, engaging them in business through experiences and mentorships. Students in FLEX create real businesses, provide natural products and services, and make real money.
“Valdosta is a place where you can grow, where you can learn and network,” stated Calloway. “I thank everybody here in Valdosta, and please make sure you come get some soap.”
National Small Business Week serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting and nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit within the community. As Valdosta continues to evolve, Chamber officials say they remain committed to championing small businesses and fostering an environment where they can flourish and succeed.
