ADEL — A man was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for the 2017 shooting of an Adel police officer during an armed robbery, according to the district attorney for Cook County.
Jermaine Davis, 44, pleaded guilty to armed robbery, aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a peace officer and six other charges, according to a statement from Dick Perryman, district attorney for the Alapaha Judicial Circuit.
Chief Alapaha Circuit Judge Howard McClain sentenced Davis to life and he will not be released from prison for 30 years, according to the statement.
At 11:18 p.m. Aug. 5, 2017, Adel police received a 911 call about an armed robbery at Adel Food Mart, 615 N. Hutchinson Ave., according to a statement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Officer Joshua Weeks encountered the suspect as he left the store, the GBI said.
The suspect shot at Weeks, who received a non-life-threatening wound to the temple, according to the statement. The officer also fired his weapon, the GBI said.
The suspect fled but was arrested a short time later by Adel police and deputies from Cook and Lowndes counties, the statement said. The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office sent tracking dogs to help with the search, and it was the dogs that located the suspect, Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk said at the time.
Weeks recovered and returned to duty, police said.
