VALDOSTA – A passenger died Thursday evening in a one-vehicle wreck along Clyattville Nankin Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Jason Dwayne Shelton, 49, of Valdosta, originally from Warren, Texas, was ejected from the convertible Mitsubishi Eclipse, according to the GSP report. Witnesses attempted CPR but Lowndes County Coroner Austin Fiveash pronounced Shelton dead at the scene, according to the report.
The vehicle was driven by Jennifer Marie Penney of Valdosta; she was wearing a seatbelt and had to be extricated from the Eclipse; she was transported to Tallahassee, Fla., Memorial Hospital via Air Methods for injuries sustained to her head, according to the report.
At 5:41 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, Kelch was dispatched to the Clyattville Nankin Road at Sand Oak Drive.
The Eclipse “was traveling west on Clyattville Nankin Road attempting to negotiate a curve,” Kelch said in a statement. “The vehicle, which was traveling above the posted speed limit, traveled off the north shoulder of the roadway into a ditch. The Eclipse then began to overturn numerous times.”
The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident.
The fatality marks the sixth roadway death since the start of the year in Lowndes County.
