The Apprentice: Greg Miller

President Donald Trump has inspired a lot of books.
A whole lot of books, from bestsellers such as Bob Woodward’s deep-dive investigative “Fear” to Michael Wolff’s soap-opera-like “Fire and Fury” to a multitude of others.
Greg Miller’s “The Apprentice: Trump, Russia and the Subversion of American Democracy” runs more toward Woodward’s efforts.
Miller is a Pulitzer Prize-winning national security correspondent with The Washington Post. He’s covered numerous aspects of Trump’s presidency and the investigations into the Trump Administration.
“The Apprentice” is not a bestseller compared to “Fear” or “Fire and Fury” but Miller’s methods are closer to Woodward than Wolff.
Specifically, “The Apprentice,” as the subtitle indicates, looks closely at the potential relationship between Russia and Trump but more closely to Russia’s efforts to throw the 2016 election in Trump’s favor.
Readers will find all of the expected players: Vladmir Putin, Robert Mueller, James Comey, Hillary Clinton and, or course, Donald Trump and family.
Much of the book is familiar ground for people following news reports of the Trump presidency – everything from the Steele dossier and its reports of Russian prostitutes to presidential ire of then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions recusing himself from the Russian investigation to Trump digging a deeper hole and ensuring Mueller’s investigation by firing Comey then not staying on script as to why he terminated the FBI director, etc.
But there are also several unexpected gems. Miller writes brief but dazzling biographies of Putin and Mueller, for example.
Miller reports Putin is disappointed in Trump’s performance.
Apparently, the Russian leader expected more bang for his buck by promoting Trump through propaganda disguised as American social media posts during the 2016 election, according to the book. Instead, despite Trump’s words of support for Putin, the president has been unable to stop economic and diplomatic sanctions against Russia.
“The Apprentice” ends with Trump and Putin’s controversial and much criticized meeting in Helsinki. But the investigations continue.
