Twenty years of Peach State Summer Theatre

Peach State Summer Theatre celebrates 20 years of professional musical theatre in South Georgia next week with Peach Party Bingo.
The anniversary celebration promises musical entertainment, hors d’oeuvres, fun and big prizes, all while helping continue PSST on its next 20 years, says Jacque Wheeler, PSST artistic director.
“Come support Peach State in your casual beach attire — Hawaiian shirt or sundress and flip-flops — while demonstrating your bingo skills at games designed specifically for this fundraiser,” Wheeler says.
Each $50 ticket includes appetizers, a drink and one bingo card. Additional bingo cards are available for $10 each, or three additional for $25.
Event prizes include trips to the beach and to Atlanta, dinners at Valdosta restaurants, gourmet food and spa gift items, a tailgate party for 20 at a Valdosta State University home football game, the grand prize of Girardin diamond jewelry, etc.
The 2010 PSST season opened June 4 with “White Christmas,” followed by the opening of Disney’s “Mulan” last weekend, and the opening of “The Secret Garden” this weekend. Once all three shows have premiered, they run in rotation through July 18.
Before opening Peach State Summer Theatre in Valdosta, the program was known as Jekyll Island Musical Theatre Festival.
For 15 years, VSU Theatre reps traveled to Jekyll Island to present three musicals during a 10-week period. By 2005, budget restraints within the state’s university system resulted in the move to Valdosta and the creation of Peach State. But PSST’s framework remains built on that of Jekyll Island, which also used a combination of VSU Theatre faculty and students mixed with other theatre professionals to create something independent of VSU each summer.
PSST is the official musical theatre for the state of Georgia.
