VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Fire Department had the distinct pleasure of welcoming an exceptional guest, Badan Hamlin, to Station One as VFD’s Fire Chief for a Day.
After meeting him during a reading session with local children, Fire Chief Brian Boutwell extended this unique opportunity to Badan. The week prior, Valdosta Police Department’s Chief Leslie Manahan engaged with the same group of children, humorously suggesting that the kids aspire to be police officers rather than firefighters. While the majority cheered in agreement, young Badan confidently voiced his dream of becoming a firefighter. Badan said he wants to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, who served as a captain at the City of Quitman Fire Department.
Impressed by Badan’s enthusiasm and determination, Boutwell invited him to experience a day in the life of a fire chief. Accompanied by his grandmother, Badan arrived at Station One and began his day by leading a meeting with the command staff. His adventure continued as he joined Lt. Chad Roe and Lt. Darren Williams in inspecting the fire truck. One of the highlights of Badan’s adventure was riding in the front seat of the fire truck during a simulated call around the block and participating in the ladder setup.
“The Valdosta Fire Department extends its heartfelt gratitude to Badan Hamlin for his enthusiasm and dedication,” the VFD said in a press release about the experience. “Badan’s passion and excitement were an impactful reminder to the VFD of why they chose a career in the fire service. VFD looks forward to the day Badan might join the fire service as a professional firefighter.”
