VALDOSTA — Deb House has a way of capturing familiar scenes that breathes fresh life into them.

Her paintings of the Lowndes County Courthouse and the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts bring new perspective to sites viewers know well. Her rich palette has colors that are vivid and bright, making these architectural portraits as lively as her bouquet canvases of flowers.

These works can be seen in the lobby of The Valdosta Daily Times as Deb House is the Southern Artists League’s Artist of the Month for August.

Art and painting have been lifelong pursuits for House. Her father’s work in oil paintings first captivated her when she was 10 years old. Her mother loved design and color and always encouraged Deb.

Meanwhile, her father’s career kept the family on the road, moving often throughout the Southeast and traveling through portions of Europe. Traveling “gave me an appreciation of cultural diversification and various terrain,” House notes in an artistic statement, “oftentimes, great subject matter for painting.”

She has lived in Valdosta for the past 24 years. She and husband Buddy have raised four children. She consistently works at her art, training with various other artists and taking classes. She has exhibited her work often with Artists on Ashley and City Market. She’s participated in exhibits at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts and Smith Northview Hospital. In September, her works will be on display as the Southern Artists League artist at the Holiday Inn.

“I have enjoyed painting for my family and friends for many years,” House notes. “I give God the glory for providing me with opportunities to share with all of them any talent I might have.”
