Warming shelter opening in Valdosta

VALDOSTA — A local charitable group opened a warming shelter Monday night as temperatures in the Azalea City dip.

Lowndes Associated Ministries to People will operate the warming shelter at 714 Charlton Street through Thursday, a post to the group’s Facebook page said. It will open at 6 p.m. each evening.

The shelter will accommodate 12-15 people, the post said.

Volunteers are needed, and the post asks for the following donations: Coffee, sugar, hot chocolate, cups, bowls, spoons, creamer, gloves, skull caps, laundry detergent, soap, shampoo, blankets, skin moisturizer or Vaseline, loaves of bread, sandwich meat, mayonnaise, mustard and donations of four days’ worth of soups.

National Weather Service forecasts show Valdosta’s overnight low dipping to 30 degrees Monday night.
