VALDOSTA –– Valdosta State women’s basketball coach Carly Kuhns appears to be leaving her alma mater to become the head coach at Samford University, sources confirmed to the Valdosta Daily Times.
Kuhns guided the Blazers to a 66-29 record (69.5 percent win percentage) in three seasons at her alma mater, breathing new life into the Valdosta State women’s basketball upon her arrival. The winning percentage is the second best for a coach in program history, behind Lyndal Worth’s 69.6 clip.
In her first season, Kuhns led VSU to a 22-10 record and its first Gulf South Conference championship since 1984. In 2017-18, the Blazers made their first Sweet Sixteen appearance since 2012 and this past season, the No. 5-seeded Blazers advanced to the Gulf South Conference Championship game.
Under Kuhns, the Blazers went 38-8 at home, including 14 straight home wins during the 2017-18 campaign.
Samford’s head coaching vacancy opened March 18 following the retirement of coach Mike Morris, who coached the Bulldogs for 17 seasons. Morris notched 279 wins at Samford, including seven 20-win seasons and two Southern Conference championships.
After taking over a VSU program that went 11-17 the year before she arrived to replace her former coach Kiley Hill, Kuhns now appears to be inheriting a Samford women’s basketball program that finished 10-20 this past season and finished 5-9 in conference play.
Mike Robinson, with The Ball Out, was the first to report that Samford was hiring Kuhns.
