Cloudy with a Chance of Socks: Sock drop to benefit Haitian children Apr. 29

TIFTON, Ga. — Tifton will see its first sock drop on Sunday, April 29, from 4-6 p.m. at the E.B. Hamilton Complex football field.

Operation Sock Drop is the brainchild of 8-year-old Porter Johnson, who has a prosthetic leg.

“We were trying to come up with a fundraiser,” Johnson said, to raise money to help children in Haiti who need prosthetics and can’t otherwise afford them.

He said that he realized most of them don’t have prosthetics and he wants to help.

Here’s how it works: Sock entries can be purchased through April 27, with the entrants ‘name written on socks.

Those socks will be dropped out of an airplane at 5 p.m., April 29.

The sock that lands closest to the center of the bullseye on the ground  will win its buyer $500.

Johnson, who has been through five prosthetics of his own, knows about how specialized and expensive the process can be.

To make a prosthetic, first there must be a cast made of where it is going to go, then the makers custom build it for each person.

The money raised will benefit One Leg Up On Life, a nonprofit that provides prosthetic limbs to amputees who cannot afford them. He is also donating his outgrown prosthetic legs.

Johnson said that he wants the kids in Haiti to be able to play like he can. He plays basketball, baseball, golf and swims. He also plays football at home with his friends.

He hopes to be able to go to Haiti and play with the kids who benefit from the prosthetics.

He also wants to tell them about God and the Bible, he said.

Sock entries must be purchased by April 27 to be eligible. Sock entries are $10 or $25 for three.

Update: The headline has been updated to reflect that the sock drop takes place April 29.
