Development Authority combats negative jobs report

VALDOSTA — The Lowndes-Valdosta Development Authority said it is working with the City of Valdosta and Lowndes County on policy matters after hearing a negative jobs report for South Georgia.

Authority members met Monday with Chris Clark, president and CEO of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, to discuss South Georgia job trends.

“If we do nothing, it’s just going to run us over,” Authority Chair Tom Call said.

Call did not specify the contents of the report.

Development Authority Executive Director Andrea Schruijer said her staff continues working with a prospective company needing rail that would create 45-65 jobs.Schruijer said her staff is working with the Southern United States Trade Center and the World Trade Center in Savannah to sell Lowndes County food products internationally.

VLDA staff is working on six active projects looking to locate in Valdosta and Lowndes County with a potential capital investment of approximately $146 million and 425 new jobs, Schruijer said.

Meghan Barwick, VLDA marketing and research manager, said Valdosta, Atlanta, New York City, Virginia and Jacksonville Beach, Fla., are the top locations of visitors to the VLDA web site.

The VLDA’s next meeting will be held Tuesday, June 20, at 5:30 p.m. at 103 Roosevelt Drive in the Development Authority conference room.

The meeting is open to the public.
