Man accused of taking $560 in coins from laundry

MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Moultrie man arrested during a Monday traffic stop has been jailed on burglary and other charges and could face additional felony burglary counts.

Police spoke with Charlie Elmer Covington, who at about 2:35 a.m. was in a 2002 Toyota 4Runner behind Roger’s Appliance in the 700 block of West Central Avenue.

Covington told police that he had taken an agitator from an “abandoned” washer at the business to use to fix his own washing machine. He put the part back in the washer.

During a check, the Moultrie officer found that Covington, 30, of Sardis Church Road, had no valid driver’s license, and arrested him on charges of driving without license and theft by taking.

Further investigation revealed that Covington is a suspect in several thefts of coins out from laundry mats where he previously had been employed, said Moultrie Police Department Lt. Freddie Williams.

“He kept keys” from the places he worked, Williams said. “He is on camera going back, taking coins.”

Police also have charged Covington with one count of burglary. He is accused of stealing about $560 at Speedy Wash Coin Laundry, 506 Hwy. 133 S., at about 1 a.m. Monday.

Covington is the suspect in one or more other thefts from coin laundry machines, Williams said.
