Two charged in Berrien boater’s death
NASHVILLE — Two Charlton County men have been charged in a June boating incident that killed a Berrien County man, according to state authorities.
Sonny Lewis, 31, of Berrien County was knocked into the Satilla River in Camden County June 22 after the jon boat he was in was struck by a bass boat at about 10:30 p.m., according to a statement from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
A fishing contest, the Flathead Catfish Tournament, was underway on the river at the time, according to the statement.
Lewis’ body was recovered by game wardens June 24 after a search by sonar-equipped boats and the DNR’s aviation unit, the statement said. No injuries were reported from other occupants of either boat in the collision, according to the department.
Thursday, game wardens charged Robbie McInvale, 31, of Folkston with homicide by vessel, reckless operation of vessel, boating under the influence and party to crime, while Nicholas Seyler, 19, also of Folkston, is charged with providing false statements, according to the statement.
Both Seyler and McInvale have bonded out of the Camden County Jail, according to jail records.
The DNR Critical Incident Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident and additional charges are possible, the statement said.
