Live Oak library to host woodturning bowls presentation

LIVE OAK — Woodturning will be the focus of the Pioneer Life series in April at the Live Oak Public Library.

The monthly series, which is held the first Thursday of the month, will feature Dana Homminga presenting on woodturning bowls from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday.

Woodturning is a type of woodworking used to create wooden objects — wood bowls, table legs, candle sticks and goblets, for example — on a lathe. A lathe is a power tool that rotates a piece of wood on an axis and allows someone to shape it using carving tools.

Also on the schedule for the library, which is part of the Suwannee River Regional Library system, in April is a finger food recipe swap Tuesday. People are encouraged to bring their favorite finger food or sandwiches and the recipe to sample and swap with others from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, Tobacco Free Florida will meet at the library from noon to 1p.m. for a tobacco cessation meeting. The group will provide free tools and services to help those in need get started on a tobacco free journey. Pre-registration is required. Please call 866-341-2730 to register. The next meeting will be held June 2.

The Seed Library is open at the library every Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. Seeds may be checked out for spring gardens and the Master Gardeners will be available to answer any gardening questions.

On Wednesday evening, Francis Gary Powers Jr., an international lecturer on the Cold War, will be at the library at 6 p.m. Powers is the son of Francis Gary Powers, the U2 pilot shot down over Russia in 1960 and is an expert on the incident and the Cold War. He also founded the Cold War Museum in Virginia and has published a book, “Letters from a Soviet Prison: the personal journal and correspondence of CIA U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers.” Copies will be available for purchase and signing.

A certified Health Insurance Navigator will be at the library Thursday, starting at 9 a.m., to assist with questions on the Affordable Care Act. Please call Beverley Fountain with the Suwannee River Area Health Education Center to schedule an appointment at 386-249-4260 or 386-462-1551.

Library staff member Debra Barney will teach a knitting class April 11 at 11:30 a.m. and a crocheting class April 18 at 11:30 a.m., both in the small conference room. Those attending should bring needles and yarn.

The Master Gardeners will present a workshop on summer greens April 11 at 2 p.m. They will discuss how to select the right greens to grow and how to alter growing techniques to account for heat, bugs and potential lack of rain.

Ed McCook will be at the library April 12 from noon to 1 p.m. to discuss the Suwannee River. McCook is a land management specialist with the Suwannee River Water Management District. Discussions will include where the famous name came from, why the river is its notable tea color, water levels for paddling and when the river is and is not safe to be in. He will also discuss the more than 300 documented springs in the area.

A CPR and First Aid Class will be taught by Suwannee County Fire Rescue from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 14. Those completing the class will receive a certificate. The class is free of charge and space is limited. Call the circulation desk at 386-362-2317 to register.

Suwannee County Extension Agent Carolyn Saft will present a gardening workshop on Wind Resistant Trees at noon April 19.

Local musician Jasper Lowder will perform a concert at the library April 23 at 6 p.m. He will perform a variety of music from country to original songs wile also playing an acoustic guitar. He has performed internationally in Europe as well as locally in Dowling Park and Lake City.

The Book Club will meet April 25 at 2 p.m. to discuss “Into the Water” by Paula Hawkins. In addition to being a No. 1 New York Times bestseller, it also was a Goodreads Choice Award winner for mystery/thriller. Copies are available for checkout at the front desk.

Bonnie Box, with the UF/IFAS Suwannee County Extension Office, will present a food demo and tasting program April 26 at noon. She will demonstrate how to prepare black bean quesadillas and share recipes that are low-cost, healthy, easy and tasty.

Kevin M. Gilpin, the executive director for the National Crime Stop Program, will present Identity Protection 101 at the library April 26 at 6 p.m. The key topics presented will be: financial fraud, IRS and tax fraud, debit and credit card fraud, wireless pick-pocketing and how to get a free credit report.
