Blazers’ Mohl in running for NFCA National Player of the Year

VALDOSTA, Ga. — Valdosta State’s Jessica Mohl landed among the top 25 players in the country in consideration for the 2018 Schutt Sports/ NFCA Division II Softball Player of the Year on Monday.

Mohl joined  Montevallo’s Kelsey Vining and Lee’s Taylor Moran as one of three representatives from the Gulf South Conference to make the cut.

Mohl’s season has included an array of incredible moments, several of which came within the last two days during VSU’s three-game sweep of Shorter. This weekend alone, the West Palm Beach native hit .500 with two homers and a double. Her first long ball of the series came in the bottom of the seventh Saturday with the Blazers trailing by one. Her game-tying shot sent the game to extra frames and allowed Valdosta State an opportunity to win it in the ninth inning.

In Game 3 of the same series, she delivered another clutch hit in the bottom of the sixth to drive home the winning run and seal the weekend sweep with a 6-5 win Sunday.

On the season, Mohl has been a juggernaut in the leadoff position for VSU. To complement her stellar defensive work at third base, she ranks among the league’s top five in nearly every major offensive statistical category, including batting average (.462, fourth), slugging percentage (.811, third), on-base percentage (.554, third), runs scored (60, first), hits (66, second), RBIs (39, third), doubles (18, first), triples (6, second) and stolen bases (30, third).

The 2018 Schutt Sports / NFCA Division II Softball Player of the Year is expected to be announced in May.
