Crazy for You
VALDOSTA – “Crazy for You” may be best described by one of the Gershwin songs in the musical: “Shall We Dance?”
Before discussing the timeless songs by brothers George and Ira Gershwin (“Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Embraceable You,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” etc.) or the humor written by comedic playwright Ken Ludwig (“Lend Me a Tenor,” “Leading Ladies”), Jacque Wheeler, the show director, mentions the “huge production numbers” in “Crazy for You” and waves over a woman she introduces as “our tapper extraordinaire.”
Lauren Tatum is the show choreographer.
She was recently the tap choreographer for the City Springs Theatre production of “Billy Elliot” and was on a national tour of “The Wizard of Oz” with Anne Marie Snyder, who plays Tess in “Crazy for You,” and Tanya and Aunt March in the PSST! productions of “Mamma Mia!” and “Little Women” respectively. Neither Tatum nor Snyder knew the other one had been hired by PSST! until they arrived in South Georgia.
For Tatum, the trick of choreographing “Crazy for You” has been balancing traditional Gershwin tropes, items written into the script — such as pickaxes and big basses — and creating original touches to make her dances unique.
And all of those things require plenty of tap dancing, she said.
Percussive sounds punctuate the dance and music, Wheeler said, adding desks, plates, even spoons become part of the tap sounds.
“Anything with any kind of surface, we’re going to tap on it,” Tatum said.
In the 1990s, Ludwig adapted the 1930s Gershwin musical, “Girl Crazy,” into “Crazy for You.” “Crazy for You” also incorporated other well-known Gershwin songs into the plot which basically revolves around the backstage antics of a New York revue show in the 1930s — romance, comedy, singing and tap dancing ensue.
In addition to big production numbers, “Crazy for You” is looking at big audiences for its opening performances this weekend.
The Friday and Saturday, June 28, 29, performances were close to selling out earlier this week — just like the opening weekends of “Mamma Mia!” and “Little Women,” the other two PSST! 2019 season shows.
“Crazy for You” is the third show of the season and all three shows will now play in rotating repertory. Plenty of seats still available for later in the season but anyone wanting to see any of the PSST! 2019 shows would be “Crazy” to wait much longer.
