Playing with momentum, No. 8 Trojans host Cougars

VALDOSTA — Armed with a speedy offense and a swarming defense, the Brooks County Trojans have an opportunity to earn a win against a top-tier Class 3A school this week.

The Trojans, ranked eighth in Class 2A in this week’s Georgia Sports Writers Association high school football poll, host Class 3A’s No. 2 Crisp County Cougars at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Veterans Stadium.

Brooks County (4-0) has the momentum needed to pull of an upset win in its final non-region contest. The defense has delivered three shutout performances in four games, while the offense continues to increase its scoring ability.

Mac Perry and Ce’Darius Arnold each rushed for two touchdowns and Jonathan White added one of his own in last week’s 49-0 homecoming win against Monroe. The Trojans closed with 295 yards rushing.

Kendrick Wade and Michael Edmonds had five tackles apiece for Brooks. Rahjon Holden, Tae’Aviion Gray and Darryl Gallon each finished with four tackles. Wade and Gallon each recorded three tackles for loss. Gallon was one of three players to recover a fumble. He returned it for a touchdown. Gray and Chris Mickens also recovered a fumble apiece.

Monroe’s offense was limited to 39 yards of total offense and five first downs.

The Cougars (4-0) shut out their last two opponents, including in last week’s 36-0 victory against Spencer. They have wins against Dooly County, Americus-Sumter and Turner County.

Crisp quarterback Myles Napier threw for 149 yards and three TDs against Spencer. Four-star running back Jammie Robinson ran for 95 yards and a score. D.J. Smith had 104 yards receiving on five catches.

The Trojans will have to contend with a powerful defense, led by four-star linebacker and Alabama commit Quay Walker (6-foot-4, 220 pounds).

Crisp County defeated Brooks County 16-14 in last year’s meeting in Cordele.
