SHS soccer players earn spots on prestigious club teams

LIVE OAK — Five Suwannee High soccer players have earned the opportunity to play for some notable soccer clubs.

Yimmy Alvarez, Oscar Rodriguez, Victor Rodriguez, CJ Joyner and Jose Tepetate have made those travel teams, and it’s a big step for the Bulldogs’ soccer program.

“I am very proud of these young men and their hard work,” said Suwannee coach Chris Joyner. “The caliber of play gives these boys the opportunity to see what is out there, as far as talent, different coaching styles, and formations. This helps them get ready for that next level if they want to play in college.”

Alvarez, a rising senior, along with juniors Oscar Rodriguez and Victor Rodriguez, will be playing for the Leg A-Z premier squad out of Gainesville. The trio combined for 21 points last season for Suwannee.

Sophomores Joyner and Tepetate made the ASG premier squad based in Tallahassee. Joyner notched two goals and eight assists a year ago. Tepetate was a JV captain, but a season-ending injury kept him from moving up to the varsity squad.

“Both clubs play showcase tournaments throughout the year,” said Chris Joyner. “The level of competition that they plan spans from different countries to stateside teams that are sponsored by the MLS. It is high competition.”
