Colquitt County Packer softball update: 3-0 start

MOULTRIE – Three games, three deficits, three wins. That’s the Colquitt County High varsity softball season through Tuesday when, down 5-1, Chance Pitts saw his offense erupt for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning. Senior pitcher Bailey Howard, who already responded to such support with strong circle work one time this season, shut down Fitzgerald High for the last four innings of a 13-5 six-inning win at Packer Park.

For the complete-game victory, Howard surrendered six hits and four earned runs out of five. She struck out three and walked one.

Colquitt’s offense pounded out 18 hits, and Fitzgerald compounded their problems with seven errors. There were four multi-hit games in the lineup led by the four from Abby Plymel, a first-time varsity starter. She drove in one run.

Senior Mary Logan Tostenton had three hits and scored three runs, Abeny Thomas brought home three runs on two hits (one a double), and senior Gracie Frazier produced two more hits, one being a triple.

First-year varsity player Kylie Davis also tripled for an RBI, and one more newcomer, Marlie Wingate, drove in two.

DOUGLAS – The Colquitt County High softball team survived a late deficit and another weather delay to defeat Coffee 5-4 Monday.

The victory raises the Lady Packers record to 2-0.

The Lady Packers squandered an early 3-0 advantage and trailed 4-3 heading into the top of the sixth when they scored two runs to regain the lead.

Then in the bottom of the seventh, Coffee had runners on first and third with one out when Kelli Johnson got a strikeout and a groundout to save the win for starter Abby Plymel.

Plymel is now 2-0 after getting the win in relief in the Lady Packers 7-6 season-opening victory over Bainbridge.

“It was a nail-biter,” said Lady Packers coach Chance Pitts. “We made a couple of errors and gave up a big hit (a double by Hollyn Lott) to let them back in it. We’re young and we’re still making some mental mistakes.”

Colquitt banged out 13 hits in the game, including three each by Plymel and Mary Logan Tostenson. Plymel had an RBI single in the sixth-inning rally.

Gracie Frazier had two more hits and is 4-for-8 in the first two games of the season.

Kelsey Patel also had two hits and Dontaysha Wilson, Marlie Wingate and Sarah Harrell had the others. Wingate’s hit was a double.

Plymel started in the circle and went the first five innings, giving up six hits and four runs, none of which were earned. She struck out one and walked three.

Johnson did her job over the final two innings, keeping the Lady Trojans off the scoreboard while allowing one hit and one base on balls. She also struck out one.
