Historical marker unveiled for Edward Waters College
LIVE OAK — A historical marker now marks where the Edward Waters College once stood in Live Oak.
The Edward Waters College Alumni Association and the African Methodist Episcopal Church held the historical marker dedication and the unveiling ceremony Sunday.
Live Oak was the birth place of Edward Waters College, Florida’s oldest historically black college.
Edward Waters College was built in Live Oak in 1872 before moving to Jacksonville in 1883.
Mayor Sonny Nobles welcomed everyone to the dedication ceremony.
He thanked Lillie Vereen for her dedication to the project.
Vereen, the National Alumni President, was the one behind the push for the marker.
Vereen said after celebrating the 150th anniversary of Edward Waters College, she realized the site needed a historical marker.
For more than a year she worked with Nobles and many others to make it happen.
“This institution is top of the line,” said Edward Waters College President Nathaniel Glover.
He added that he may not be where he is today without Edward Waters College.
Glover said most of his friends growing up ended up in jail or worse but he got a scholarship to play football at Edward Waters College.
The marker is located at the Greater New Bethel AME Church on Lisle Avenue.
