Marijuana stash discovered at motel
THOMASVILLE, Ga. — A Florida woman behind bars at the Thomas County Jail is charged with several drug and related offenses involving contraband destined for a state prison, authorities said.
A Thomas County Sheriff’s Office investigation continues into Wendy Marie Smith’s activity at the Serena Inn around midnight Friday.
Thomasville police responded to the 14866 U.S. 19 South business when someone was hit over the head with a beer bottle. While investigating the assault, officers said they detected the odor of marijuana coming from a motel room.
Smith, 35, 65 Woodruff Street, Silver Creek, and two juveniles were reportedly in the room.
“She admitted she had some marijuana and turned it over to a narcotics agent,” said Louis Schofill, commander of the Thomas County/Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division.
Said Schofill, “She was taken to jail and during a search there, more marijuana was found hidden inside her person.” A cylindrically shaped package of marijuana — in plastic wrap and covered with tape — was found in a body cavity, authorities said.
In the motel room, agents said they found a plastic bag of marijuana and 11 tiny balloons containing tobacco. Some of the marijuana found in the room also was packaged in small balloons, they said.
Schofill said Smith reportedly told agents she was packaging the contraband for distribution at an area prison. A total of about 69 grams of marijuana was seized in the arrest.
“The balloons are either swallowed or hidden in body cavities to smuggle into the prison,” said Capt. Steven Jones, sheriff’s office public information officer.
Smith, who remains in jail in lieu of a $4,100 bond, is charged with marijuana possession with intent to distribute and crossing guardline with contraband. Other charges are pending.
An investigation will be conducted into the presence of the juveniles who were in the motel room with Smith, authorities said.
