Curry assumes command



On Friday, Oct. 31, Jennings native Army Sgt. Maj. Sylvester Curry assumed responsibility as the Joint Communication Support Element’s (JCSE) Command Sergeant Major from Command Sgt. Maj. William R. Conner.



Equivalent to an Air Force Group, JCSE, is made up of all four services. Its mission is to provide rapidly deployable communications to Joint Task Force commanders worldwide. For the change of command JCSE assembled on their own parade deck at MacDill AFB in Tampa along with senior leadership from the United States Joint Forces Command, the Georgia Air National Guard, and the Florida Air National Guard. Army Col. James A. Lien, JCSE Commander, welcomed Sergeant Major Curry and officiated the ceremony. He welcomed Sergeant Major Curry to the Department of Defense’s front-line communications unit.



Command Sergeant Major Sylvester Curry Jr. was born in Jennings on May 4, 1957. He enlisted in the Army in Feb. 1978. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology from the University of Phoenix.



He has served three tours in the Federal Republic of Germany: 1/75th Field Artillery Bamberg, 123rd Signal Battalion, Kitzingen, and the 43rd Signal Battalion, Heidelberg Germany. His stateside assignments include: 8th Engineer Battalion, Ft. Hood; 24th Signal Battalion, Ft. Stewart; 124th Signal Battalion Ft. Hood; Information Systems Command, Ft. Huachua; 123rd Signal Battalion Ft. Stewart.



Leadership positions CSM Curry has held include: Team Chief, Section Chief, Platoon Sergeant, First sergeant, and command Sergeant Major.



He is a graduate of Class 47 of the U. S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. He military education includes the: Primary Leadership Course, Advance Noncommissioned Officer Course, Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officer Course and the First Sergeant Course.



Command Sergeant Major Curry is married to the former Gwendolyn E. Morris of Jennings. They have six children Derrek, Antonio, Kandyce, Jamal, Brittney, and Dreamer.
