UGA to get keys to former Navy supply school

The University of Georgia will soon be the official owner of the former U.S. Navy Supply Corps School in Athens.

The official transfer of the school to UGA will be March 31 when a U.S. Department of Education official signs the public conveyance deed and the keys are handed over to the university.

UGA has plans to use the facility for a medical program in partnership with the Georgia Health Sciences University, formerly known as the Medical College of Georgia. Classes will begin in the fall of 2012.

The Navy School opened on the site in 1953. The U.S. Department of Defense announced plans in 2005 to move the school to Rhode Island.

UGA is spending $11.4 million to renovate the property.
