VSU women’s tennis advances to GSC championship match
Valdosta State used a pair of 5-1 victories to roll into the championship match of the Gulf South Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament Saturday.
The Lady Blazers defeated West Georgia in the day’s first match before toppling North Alabama in the second.
VSU won all three doubles points against the Wolves, starting with an 8-0 victory by Alina Nagel and Laura Ubeda at No. 2. Michelle Fischer and Julianna Boehm won 8-1 at No. 1 while Jennifer Rink and Jessica Tuggle claimed an 8-2 win at No. 3 to put VSU in front 3-0.
The Lady Blazers claimed two of the three doubles matches against North Alabama, beginning with an 8-0 victory by Rink and Tuggle at No.3. Nagel and Ubeda followed with an 8-1 win at No. 2 while UNA’s Mackenzie Bishop and Natalia Barragan defeated Fischer and Boehm 9-8 at No. 1.
Tuggle pushed VSU’s lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles while Boehm won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 to put VSU on the verge of victory. Meanwhile, Ubeda won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 to close out the match.
VSU will face West Florida in the final today at 11 a.m. Eastern. The VSU men’s team beat Christian Brothers in the quarterfinals, but the Blazers’ semifinal match against West Alabama was not completed by press.
