Ex-Packer coaches open with victories
MOULTRIE, Ga. – Two former Colquitt County assistants, now in their first years as head coaches in Georgia, led their teams to season-opening victories last weekend.
Sean Calhoun, who was the Packers’ offensive coordinator last year before taking over as the head man at Carrollton, led his team to a 16-6 season-opening victory over Newnan.
John Cooper, another former Packer assistant, is the Trojans’ offensive coordinator. The Trojans will be back at home this Friday night to play host to Riverdale, which defeated North Clayton 40-12 in its opener.
Robert Craft, an assistant under both Tim Cokely and Rush Propst in Moultrie and also the head coach at North Florida Christian, won his first game as head coach at Region 5-7A North Forsyth as the Raiders defeated Sequoyah 34-14.
North Forsyth will travel this Friday to meet Johns Creek, which lost its opener to Lassiter 27-13.
Ex-Packer assistant Zach Grage, who took over the Thomasville program this year after a season at Gilmer County, dropped his season-opener as the Bulldogs fell 23-12 at Cairo. It won’t get any easier for the Bulldogs this Friday when they host Thomas County Central. The Yellow Jackets opened with a 48-7 win vs. Worth County.
Former Packers defensive assistant Shelton Felton opened his second season as head coach at Crisp County by leading the Cougars to 38-6 victory over Dooly County. Crisp will try to go to 2-0 when it goes to Americus-Sumter County on Friday.
Four future Colquitt County opponents won their season-openers last weekend, three others lost and two, the Florida schools on the schedule, open this week.
Getting victories in the first week of the season were Brookwood, which won over North Gwinnett 37-23 in the Corky Kell Classic; Roswell, which beat Buford, also in the Corky Kell; Valdosta, which stunned Lowndes 38-13 in the Winnersville Classic; and Tift County, which blanked South Effingham 41-0 in the Erk Russell Classic in Statesboro.
In addition Lowndes, Tucker also lost, falling to Kell 20-13 in the Kell Classic. Camden County dropped a rare game to a Florida school, losing 27-13 to Oak Leaf in Orange Park.
American Heritage of Plantation, Fla., which will visit Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium on Saturday, played a preseason game against highly regarded Booker T. Washington of Miami on Friday and fell 27-7.
The International School of Broward County, Colquitt County’s Sept. 30 Homecoming opponent, will play its season-opener on Thursday against Coral Springs Charter School.
This week, Tucker will play host 1-0 Lakeside-DeKalb; Brookwood will play host to 0-1 Walton; Valdosta will be at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium to face 1-0 Woodland High of Stockbridge; Camden County will go to Florida again to face 0-0 Venice; Tift County will play 0-1 Cook at Brodie field; and Lowndes will play host to 0-0 Bayside, Fla.
Roswell will be off.
Remember Zach Yenser, an offensive assistant with the Packers in 2009? He is now the offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Kansas.
Former Packer defensive coordinators Travis Pearson and Tracy Buckhannon, who were most recently at South Alabama, are now on the staff at Alabama A&M.
Rico Zachery, who was a defensive assistant for the Packers before becoming the head coach at Central of Carrollton, is now the director of recruiting operations at Georgia Southern.
