Brooks places 14, Berrien four on all-region team
VALDOSTA — The Brooks County Trojans had 14 players named to Region 1-2A’s all-region team this week.
“Based on all the kids that got banged up and missed games here and there, it means a lot,” coach Maurice Freeman said Thursday. “We were able to continue to piece it together and keep it working and get ourselves to the second round of the playoffs. It still shows that Region 1-2A is certainly a tough, tough region and we’re certainly happy about the guys that made it.”
Lineman Ryan Wade was the lone Trojans senior to make the first team. He was joined by juniors Jonathan White, Khalid Humphries, Jerrell Woodson and Rahjon Holden.
White was the team’s leading rusher with 741 yards on 132 carries for four touchdowns, adding 18 catches for 192 yards and a TD as a receiver. Humphries led all Brooks receivers with 27 receptions for 563 yards and eight touchdowns.
Sophomores Deon Fountain, who finished with 28 catches for 280 yards and two touchdowns, Tae’Aviion Gray and Anthony Daniels were also listed on the first team.
Junior linebackers Kendrick Wade and Michael Edmonds were joined by fellow junior Ce’darius Arnold and senior Jacquajah Washington on the all-region second-team defensive unit.
Senior Naiquavis Sutton and junior Nick Ryles were named to the second-team offense.
With all but three of Brooks’ all-region performers being underclassmen, it encourages Freeman about the possibilities of what next season could have in store.
“That means we have some pretty good players coming back, and if they can do some work in the offseason and continue to stay focused, we may have a pretty decent team next year,” the coach said.
Berrien, which made its second playoff appearance in three years, was rewarded with four first-team all-region picks. Junior center Austin Lasseter repeated as an all-region selection and was joined from the Rebels’ offense by senior fullback Zack Nelson. Nelson rushed for 220 yards and two touchdowns on just 35 carries.
Senior TJ Bryant represented the Rebels’ defense as a defensive tackle and senior Christian Faulkner was named all-region at kicker after hitting 17 of 19 extra points and five of seven field goals.
