Suwannee scores seven times in win at Lafayette
MAYO — When Autumn Raulerson took the field on Monday, she was lining up to play against some familiar faces.
The Lafayette senior played soccer at Suwannee High School her first three years before transferring.
Raulerson played well against her former team, scoring Lafayette’s only goal, but Suwannee left with a 7-1 victory.
SHS (6-2-1) scored the game’s first six goals. Suwannee received four goals from Baylor Burch, two from Zoey Layton and one goal from Susie Gonzalez.
Layton scored in the fourth minute and the 17th minute to give SHS a quick 2-0 lead. The Lady Bulldogs took a 5-0 edge into halftime.
“They had a better confidence about themselves,” said Suwannee coach Darrell Curls. “Maybe this will be a turning point. We got a huge district game Friday night in Jacksonville.”
Raulerson’s goal came in the 60th minute. She booted a high shot into the net from 20 yards out.
“She has come in and fit right in,” Lafayette coach Lucie Gresham said of Raulerson. “She’s brought a lot of knowledge to the team.”
Gresham thought her team pressed trying to help Raulerson defeat some of her former teammates.
“I think they wanted it so bad to beat them for her — that we didn’t play to our expectations,” Gresham said.
LHS is now 5-5-2. The Lady Hornets play at Taylor County today at 5 p.m. Suwannee is 6-2-1 and will travel to Stanton Prep High School on Friday for a match at 7:20 p.m.
