Lucille Mathis

Lucille Mathis, 82 of Nashville passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center.

She was born on Oct. 24, 1923, in Berrien County to the late Christopher Columbus and Stacy Girdner Bass Tatum. She was a homemaker and member of Riverside Missionary Baptist Church. She was the widow of Perry Mathis who died in 1998. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Perry Alton Mathis and Arthur Mathis.

She is survived by four daughters, Evelyn Kent, Bonnie Baker, both of Nashville, Faye Morris, Altha, Fla., Martha Sue Holloway, Sparks; five sons, Donald Mathis, Robert Mathis, Billy Mathis, all of Nashville, Jerry Mathis, Joe Mathis, both of Baker, Fla.; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Sarah Jarboe, Riverview, Fla., and Lois Waunell Brogdon of Nashville.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, in the chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. Junior Swain and the Rev. Clarence Luke officiating. Burial will be held in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held today after 4 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 7-9 p.m. — Lovein Funeral Home



VALDOSTA

James O. Smith

James O. Smith, 85, of Valdosta died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at the Brooks County Hospital. He was born in Lancaster, Ill., on July 27, 1921, to the late James Voris and Florence Rose McCoslin Smith and had lived in Valdosta for 44 years. Mr. Smith was retired from the U.S. Air Force as a pilot and air traffic controller and was a television repairman with Sears. He was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church, the Ham Radio Club and the Elks Club. Mr. Smith had served as a Red Coat volunteer with South Georgia Medical Center.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Smith III of Valdosta, David and Dixie Smith of Marietta; four daughters and one son-in-law, Viki Bowen of Plant City, Fla., Suzie Hubbell of Acworth, Diane Smith of Valdosta and Holly and Terry Grammer of Lake Haven, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Bill and Helen Smith of Sarasota, Fla., Theron and Ethel Smith, Ester Smith, all of Indiana. He was preceded in death by his wife, Deane Alice Hayes Smith.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Peter Ingeman officiating. Burial will follow in the church urn garden with full military honors. The family will receive friends following the service at the church in the parish hall. Joe Frank McGowian, 57, of Nashville, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta.
