John Virgil Arrendale Jr.
QUITMAN — John Virgil Arrendale Jr., 90, Quitman, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001. Born in Heyward, Wis., he was the son of John Virgil and Tallulah Edwards Arrendale. He had been a resident of Brooks County since 1951, moving here from Tiger. He was a retired dairy manager for the South Georgia Dairy Co-Op, a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII, and a member of the Quitman United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Gwen Arrendale of Quitman; one son, Ervin (Dianne) Arrendale of Dixie; two grandsons, Chad and Joshua Arrendale; and one brother, Dr. Joe Arrendale of Douglas. Thelma McAfee Bloodworth
VALDOSTA — Thelma McAfee Bloodworth, 84, a longtime resident of Valdosta, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at 7:38 a.m. after a brief struggle with cancer. She was born on March 28, 1917, in Grady County, Ga. to the late Reuben and Mattie Alred McAfee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Fondon Bloodworth in 1944, while residing in Albany, Ga. Mrs. Bloodworth was retired from food service with the Valdosta City Schools and was for many years a member of Forrest Street Church of God. Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, Lester Lamar of Valdosta, Earl and Gladys Bloodworth of Pikeville, Tenn., Leroy and Connie Bloodworth of Florence, S.C., Gordon and Glenda Bloodworth of Eldoret, Kenya; two daughters and one son-in-law, Maritha and Danny Lockerby of Orange Park, Fla., and Carolyn Bloodworth Nicolet of Bremerton, Wash.; one sister, Bertha Lee (Mrs. John Wesley) Owens of Putney, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren; one great- great- grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Forrest Street Church of God with the Rev. Wayne Hughes officiating. John David Copeland
LAKE PARK — John David Copeland, 68, of Lake Park died Sept. 4, 2001, at home of lung cancer. Born in Naylor, Ga., on Sept. 7, 1932, he was the eldest son of the late Granger Jacob and Susie Mildred Peters Copeland of Valdosta. He was educated in the Lowndes County School System, graduating from Pine Grove High School in 1951. He worked for Schroer Plant Farms until January 1954, when he became employed at the paper mill in Clyattville. In 1967, he transferred with Owens-Illinois to Orange, Texas. He retired as paper machine supervisor in 1984, due to disability. Upon retiring to Georgia, he and his wife settled at Francis Lake in Lake Park. On March 21, 1986, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, he became the first person in Lowndes County to receive a heart transplant, and celebrated 15 1/2 years as a successful recipient. Mr. Copeland was a member of Francis Lake Baptist Church and the Tall Pines Retirement Club. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Mary Alice Peters Copeland; his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Jacob “Jake” and Bashie Copeland, Robert and Joyce Copeland of Lake Park, Carlton and Linda Copeland of Alachua, Fla., Almarene Dawkins, Carolyn and Kenneth Jackson of Valdosta; sisters-in-law, Carolyn P. William Burt Dial
HOMERVILLE — Mr. William Burt “Willie” Dial, 81, of Homerville passed away Wednesday afternoon, at his residence, following an extended illness. A native of Brantley County, he had lived in Clinch County for 52 years. He was a retired carpenter and a member of the New Pine Grove Southern Congregational Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He was the son of the late Bogan Paul Dial and Isabella Bennett Dial. Survivors are his wife, Lillian Strickland Dial, Homerville; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Roland Sutton, Homerville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. William B. and Danette Dial, Waycross and Charles E. and Amanda Dial, Homerville; two sisters, Annie Peeples, Waycross and Inez Pittman, Manor; 10 grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; one great- great- grandchild and several other relatives. Funeral services for Mr. Dial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Homerville Congregational Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Talmadge Guess and the Rev. W.D. Corbitt. VALDOSTA — Lena Philmore Ewing, 69, of Valdosta, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001. She was born on Jan. 6, 1932, in North Va. to the late Walter Mack and Hannah Rhodes. She was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. along with three brothers and four sisters. She later met Frank Ewing. They were married and had 13 children. She leaves to mourn her husband, Frank Ewing; 12 children, Hermlena, Allen, Juanita, Valerie, Francine, Frankie, Willie, Donnell, Belinda, David, Dewayne, and Monique. She leaves also two sisters and one brother; three brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; 29 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, sons, daughters-in-law, and also friends. One son preceded her in death, Walter Mack Rhodes. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Day Spring Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Powell officiating. VALDOSTA — Mrs. Glory Kirk Harris of Valdosta died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born on June 7, 1949, in Lowndes County to the late Lester Kirk, Sr. and the late Frances Flannigan Kirk. She was a member of Mt. Vienna AME Church. Beatrice S. Hutton
VALDOSTA– Beatrice S. Hutton, 85, of Valdosta died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Tallahassee Memorial Long Term Care Nursing Home. She was born on March 19, 1916, in Trenton, N.J. to the late Joseph and Etta Belle Dearoff Steiner and had lived in Valdosta for 27 years. Mrs. Hutton was a retired nurse and a member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Jill Hutton of Tallahassee, Fla.; a daughter, Beverly Smith of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Danny Hutton, Michelle McCune, Cyndi Crosby and Sharon Plummer; one great- granddaughter, Frances Plummer. NASHVILLE — Lessie Nona Luke 97, of Nashville died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Berrien County Hospital. She was born on Nov. 20, 1903, in Irwin County to the late Willie Carl and Cordelia Roberts Hall. She was the widow of James Ollie Luke. Mrs. Luke was a homemaker and member of Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by a daughter, Alma Carter. She was born on March 14, 1932, in Jennings, Fla. to the late Perry and Irene Simpson Kemp. She was a waitress and a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters and three sons-in-law, Linda and James Griffin, Wanda and Jerry Tison, Kim and Don Wardwell, all of Valdosta; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Anthony and Lesa Mitchell of Jacksonville, Fla., Andrew J. HOMERVILLE — Mrs. Beatrice Croft Moore, 81, passed away Wednesday night in the Clinch Memorial Hospital, following a short illness. A native of Live Oak, Fla., she had lived in Clinch County most of her life. She was a retired LPN, member of the Homerville United Methodist Church for 64 years and was a Sunday School Teacher for over 20 years. She was a past Royal Matron of the Eastern Star and was an honorary member of the LPN State Board. She was the daughter of the late William Eugene Croft and Lillie Mae Touchton Croft. She was the widow of Byron Elisha Moore Sr. Survivors are two daughters, Frances Cribbs, Waycross and Linda Moore, Brunswick; four sons, Aaron E. Moore, Folkston, Mason Moore and “Buddy” Byron Moore, Jr., both of Homerville, Henry Moore Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Herbert Croft, Fargo; 15 grandchildren; 16 great- grandchildren; one great- great- grandchild; and several other relatives.
