Emerson S. Chew

PERRY — Emerson S. Chew, 86, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, in Camilla. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Watson-Hunt Chapel in Perry with interment following in Perry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. today at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home. Mr. Chew was a WWII Army-Air Force Veteran; flew as a crew member on a B-17 and was initiated into the Forty and Eight. Mr. Chew, born and lived in Crawfordville for many years, where he was a 1934 graduate of Alexander Stephens Institute; owned and operated Chew Furniture Company for more than 40 years with his brother, Edgar Chew. Also while living in Crawfordville, he joined the American Legion; was a member of the Crawfordville Kiwanis Club (40 years); served on the Taliaferro County Board of Education and was a member of Crawfordville United Methodist Church holding many positions including treasurer and Sunday School superintendent. He later was a member of Perry United Methodist Church and was currently a member of St. Simons United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Helen E. Chew. Survivors include three children; Randy Chew of Pelham, Gayle C. Hughes of Homerville and Marti C. Strong of Gainesville; a sister, Dorothy C. Nobles of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Jake Stewart

ENIGMA — Jake Stewart, 103, of Enigma, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Beverly Health Care. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Enigma Congregational Christian Church. The Rev. Martin Wilson and the Rev. Pete Jones will officiate. Burial will follow in Enigma Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons-in-law, Larry Kennedy, Ted Cone, Mike Panter, Larry Hunter, Joel Driver and Tom Riddle. Honorary pallbearers will be Julian Abel, Bill Cranford, O.D. Owens, Ray Carpenter, Walter Strange, Bobby Sumner, James Stewart, Lloyd Fletcher and LeRoy Little. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Mr. Stewart will be placed in the church one hour before services. Born March 5, 1899, in Enigma, Mr. Stewart was the son of Judge Harvey Stewart and Julia Tucker Stewart, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Ethel Keiffer Stewart, and three sons, Harold, Pat and Eugene Stewart. A lifetime resident of Berrien County, Mr. Stewart was a retired merchant and a member of Enigma Congregation Christian Church, where he served as a deacon since the age of 28. He also served several terms as mayor of Enigma and was on the City Council. Mr. Stewart was a familiar sight riding his bicycle up to six miles a day at the age of 98. He is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Ray Stewart of Enigma and Donald and Evelyn Stewart of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Lynn Stovall-Burch of Valdosta; one daughter-in-law, Dorothy Stewart of Tifton; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. — Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals, Tifton





Lanie Bell Brown, 90, of Quitman, passed away Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at Glenn Mor Nursing Home in Thomasville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Carmel Freewill Baptist Church in Brooks County with the Rev. William Fenny, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in North End Cemetery. — Washington Funeral Home, Quitman



Jillian Regan Guess, 14, of Valdosta, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, after a short illness. Services are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by the Carson McLane Funeral.



Fred Knox, 73, of Lakeland, passed away early Wednesday morning, Nov. 20, 2002, at his residence following a fight with cancer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Lakeland Chapel of Music Funeral Services of Lakeland due to renovation of the Kingdom Hall.
