Joe R. Beaman
VALDOSTA — Joe R. Beaman, 64, of Valdosta, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in Tipton County, Ind., and had lived in Valdosta for 33 years. Mr. Beaman was a retired corrections officer with Valdosta State Prison and a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of American Legion Post 13 and VFW Post 1777. Survivors include his wife, Flora Beaman of Valdosta; his mother, Erma Bugher of Sun City, Ariz.; two sisters, Thelma Fisher of Fredericksburg, Va., and Betty Frogue of Dallas, Texas; two brothers, Merwin Bugher of Nashville, Ind., and William Bugher of Carmel, Ind.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Sunset Hill Cemetery with Father John O’Brien officiating. Fred J. Buss
VALDOSTA — Fred J. Buss, of Statenville, passed away Monday afternoon, Oct. 8, 2001 after a lengthy illness. He had lived in Statenville for the past five years. Survivors include three daughters, Freda Abercrombie of Zeffer Hills, Fla., Carmen Johnston and Evelyn High, both of Statenville; seven grandchildren; one niece; a brother, Harry Warren Buss of Orlando, Fla. MADISON, Fla. — Sid Cherry, 39, of Madison, died Oct. 8, 2001, in Madison. He was a native and long-time resident of Madison. He was a shift supervisor at Langboard in Quitman. He attended Madison Church of God. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Foster Cherry of Madison; one son, Zach Cherry of Madison; one daughter, Bridget Cherry of Madison; his father and stepmother, Prentiss and Hiroko Cherry of Madison; his mother, Sandra Holton of Macon; two brothers, Ken Cherry and Tommy Cherry, both of Macon; two stepsisters, Lina Newman of Madison, Ala., and Linda Allbritton of Perry, Fla.; five nieces; four nephews, and one great-nephew. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Beggs Funeral Home Madison Chapel, Madison. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Madison. Mary Ann Fain
STOCKTON — Mary Ann Fain, 61, of Stockton, passed away Sunday afternoon, Oct. 7, 2001, in Ormond Memorial Hospital from a lengthy illness. She was born in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and had lived in Stockton most of her life. She was a member of Stockton Baptist Church. Her husband, James L. Fain Sr., preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Peterson of Lakeland; two sons and daughter-in-law, James L. Fain Jr. of Stockton and Riley and Alisha Fain of Pearson; three grandchildren, Tyler Peterson of Lakeland, Martha Fain and Will Fain, both of Pearson; mother, Emma Loveta Robinson, Ormond Beach, Fla.; sister, Dorothy Biss, Ormond Beach; brother, Howard Tankersley, Edgewater, Fla. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Stockton Baptist Church with burial following in Fender Cemetery, Lakeland. Mrs. Fain will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services. VALDOSTA — Patricia T. Guess, 79, of Valdosta, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Eastview Nursing Home in Macon after a lengthy illness. She was born in Miami, Fla., and had lived in Valdosta for most of her life. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Guess. She was retired from Moody Air Force Base. She is survived by three daughters, Cindy McClelland, Priscilla Ennis, both of Macon, Mary Gayle Beard of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, Richard L. Guess of California, Joseph G. Guess III of Brunswick; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Graveside services

VALDOSTA — Roy Holmes, 44, of Valdosta, passed away late Monday evening, Oct. 8, 2001 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born in Clinch County and lived in Valdosta most of his life. Survivors include his wife, Annie Holmes of Valdosta; daughter, Tonya Holmes of Valdosta; son, Franklin Holmes of Nashville; two sisters, Ann Harris and Linda Loan, both of Valdosta; two grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. BARNEY — Sadie Griffin Howell, 75, of Barney, died on Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Smith Hospital, Hahira. She was born on July 24, 1926, in Colquitt County. She was a homemaker and member of Morrison Baptist Church. Mrs. Howell was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Wilmer Howell. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis G. and Julie Howell of Barney; one daughter and son-in-law, Helen Howell and James Morris of Stockbridge; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Edison and Mary Alice Howell of Thomasville, Herbert Howell of Moultrie; one sister, Maggie Mae Manning of Plant City, Fla.; six grandchildren and their spouses, Catherine Howell, Barney, Randy and Brenda Price, Thomas Price, John and Mitzi Morris, all of Stockbridge, Beth and Stacey Morris and Yvonne Morris, all of Moultrie; and five great-grandchildren. EASTMAN — Lem B. Hughes Jr., 76, of Eastman, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Dodge County Hospital in Eastman. The Jasper, Fla., native was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Hughes. He is survived by two sons, Lynn Hughes, Thomaston, and Buster Hughes, Starke, Fla.; one daughter, Jackie Morrow, Starke; one brother, Gene Hughes, Hawaii; one sister, Ouida Guest, Jacksonville, Fla.; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. H. David Talton
MONTICELLO, Fla. — H. David Talton, 55, of Monticello, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001. A native of Elizabeth, La., and a former resident of Tallahassee and Valdosta, he had lived in Monticello since 1974. He was a self-employed insurance agent, estate planner and investment broker, was instrumental in getting the dogwood trees planted along U.S. Highway 90 and helped in the restoration of downtown Monticello. He was a member of Masonic Hiram Lodge No. 5, Monticello Kiwanis and First United Methodist Church. He was predeceased by his parents, Garnie Allen Talton and Pauline Boynton Talton of Valdosta and a sister, Garnie Sue Talton. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Talton of Monticello; a son, Matthew Allen Talton of Jacksonville; a daughter, Andrea Lynn Talton of Jacksonville; a sister, Nancy Talton Courtenay (Bradley) of Athens; a niece, Kirche Courtenay Rogers (Michael) of Knoxville; a great-niece, Caroline Rogers of Knoxville; one stepson; one stepdaughter; four stepgrandchildren; and his former wife, Sally Free Talton. The service was held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at First United Methodist Church in Monticello with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman.
