George Lathrop Barnaskey
VALDOSTA — George Lathrop Barnaskey, 83, USAF Major Retired, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004. He was born March 22, 1920, in McLean, N.Y. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and the Vietnam War. He was an Air Force pilot, and a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Vets. A survivor of fifty B-25 bomber missions in New Guinea during WWII, he was a pilot with the 5th Air Force Air Apaches of the 345th Bomb Group, 408th Squadron. He was a T-41 flight instructor for Moody AFB, in the late 60’s and early 70’s, and was also employed by Saft Industries. A resident of Valdosta since 1968, George was an active member of the First Freewill Baptist Church and a Red Cross volunteer at Moody AFB.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth “Kizzie,”sons, Edward C. Barnaskey of Seneca, S.C., Frank Harrell of Altamonte Springs, Fla., Albert Cook of Valdosta, Jimmy Cook of Jasper, Fla.; daughters, Sherry Herman, Las Vegas, Nev., Linda Harrell Guyot, Cottonwood, AL., Vern Clark and Dean Hewitt of Valdosta, Chris Becker of Poquoson, Va.; and a sister, Florence Staebler of Deer Park, N.Y.; and 22 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services with burial following in Riverview Memorial Gardens where he will receive full military honors. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at the funeral home. Lucy Everett Jarvis
GREENVILLE, Fla. — Lucy Everett Jarvis of Greenville, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at her home. She was born in Madison County, Fla., where she lived all her life. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Beulah Baptist Church in Nankin, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Jarvis, and a brother Rayford Everett.
She is survived by three nieces, Irene and Ed Hagan of Dixie, Eva Nell and Albert Bruce of Dixie and Juanita and Henry Cason of Greenville, Fla.; two nephews, Wayne and Julia Ann Everett of Cherry Lake, Fla., and Walter and Paula Jarvis of Greenville, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Tom Jarvis of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several other nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, in the Old Columbia Cemetery in Nankin, Ga. Jeptha Terrell Kenney
NASHVILLE — Jeptha Terrell Kenney, 65, of Lakeland, passed away Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at South Georgia Medical Center. Born July 25, 1938, in Thomas County, he was the son of Harvey Gordon Kenney and Mable Rosemont Wilson. He owned and operated Nashville Enterprises and was retired as a sales representative with Air Products.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Patterson Kenney.
Survivors are one stepdaughter, Terri Jackson of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one stepson, David Hargraves of Baker, Fla.; two brothers, William Kenney of Lakeland and Gordon Kenney of Gallatin, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 26 in the chapel of Lovein Funeral Home. The family requests memorials to Boy Scouts of America. — Lovein Funeral Home
Dan E. Watkins
VALDOSTA — Dan E. Watkins, 52, of Valdosta, died on Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at South Georgia Medical Center from an apparent heart attack. Born on June 13, 1951, he was the son of Mary Beth Woodward Watkins and the late Horace Manchester Watkins of Valdosta. Dan graduated from high school in Columbus, Ohio and attended Ohio State University before moving to Valdosta and enrolling at Valdosta State University. He graduated from VSU with a Bachelor of Science and a degree in math education in 1974. After living away for some time, Dan returned to Valdosta, enrolled as a student at Valdosta Technical Institute, graduating with a diploma in computer information systems and was later employed there as an instructor in math. At the time of his death, he was employed at Georgia Military College, teaching math courses there and at Moody AFB. He loved his work and talked often of his love of teaching and his students. Dan enjoyed woodworking, reading, helping others and was very creative.
He dearly loved his family, friends and students.
Other survivors include two sisters, Rebecca Kaenzig of Boone, N.C., Mary Campagna of Valdosta; one brother-in-law, James Campagna of Moultrie; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Vicky Watkins of Columbus, Ohio; nieces and nephews, Lisa Kaenzig of Geneva, N.Y., Crystal and Mike Jordan of East Greenwich, R.I., Will Barbour of Boone, N.C., Catherine and Charner Rouse of Moultrie, Josh Campagna of Valdosta, Jessica Watkins of Columbus, Ohio; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, in the Chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy DeMersseman and Dr. Don Parks officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Mildred Alice Nusom White
QUITMAN — Mildred Alice Nusom White, 74, of Quitman died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at Brooks County Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Westfield, N.Y., she was the daughter of John and Lena Arnemann Nusom. She was a member of Union Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She is survived by her children, Paul and Evelyn White McKain, Quitman, John White Lynchburg, Va., and David A. “Chip” White, Quitman; three grandchildren, James Wirges, Carrie White Wirges and Jarod White; one sister Blanche (Milton) Graham, Westfield, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Irene Nusom Westfield, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
