Lela Moore Allen

LAKELAND — Lela Moore Allen, 91, of Lakeland passed away Tuesday morning, July 19, 2005, in the Lakeland Villa Convalescent Center after a lengthy illness. She was born in Lowndes County on Jan. 15, 1914, to the late John and Willie Moore. Mrs. Allen had a love for flowers, she enjoyed caring for them until declining health forced her to stop. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hansel Allen.

Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Bernice Conine,Lakeland, Hazel Scarbough, Lakeland, Virginia Mathis, Homerville, Peggy and Frank Cannon, Ray City, Geraldine and Raymond BennettStockton; 17 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, July 22, 2005, in the chapel of Music Funeral Services with the Rev. Austin DeLoach officiating. Burial will follow in Good Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Millard P. Brown

VALDOSTA — MSgt. Millard P. Brown (ret.), 69, of Valdosta died on Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at his residence after a lengthy illness. Born on Nov. 22, 1935, in Wheeler County, he was the son of the late John and Mary Jones Brown. He retired from the Air Force and the Civil Service. Mr. Brown attended Trinity Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Brown of Valdosta, daughters and sons-in-law, Denice and Brent Vickery of Valdosta, Dena and Paul Davis of Byron; stepsons and their wives, Jeff and Judy Bickers, Bill and Libby Bickers, all of Valdosta; eight grandchildren; a brother, Cleon and Shirley Brown of McRae; and a half brother, James Brown of Savannah. He was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 22, 2005, at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Richard Hart officiating. The family will receive friends on today at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Bruce Kennedy Sr.

VALDOSTA — Bruce Kennedy Sr., 68, of Valdosta passed away Monday, July 18, 2005, at his residence after a brief illness. He was born in Jasper, Fla., on Dec. 14, 1936, to the late Robert Theodore and Qudie Kinsey Kennedy. He was Baptist by faith. Mr. Kennedy was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Sutton Kennedy; son, Bruce Kennedy Jr.; sister, Kathryn Lee; and brother, Bobby Kennedy.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Randy Jones, Sugarland, Texas, Bobbie Jean and Ed Mistick, Lake Hiawatha, N.Y.; son and daughter-in-law, Bennie Edward and Tonya Kennedy, Stockton, Ga.; eight grandchildren, April Herring, Brian Kennedy, Eric Kennedy, Robin Jones, Tony Ritter, Amanda Mistick, Whitney Kennedy and Tiffany Kennedy; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Billy Earl Kennedy, Greenville, S.C., Joe Kennedy, Lake City, Fla., Jim Kennedy, Detroit, Mich.; two sisters,Betty June Colson, Butler, Ala., Peggy Kennedy, Lake City, Fla.; close friend, Jimbo Puckett, Valdosta.

Funeral services will begin at 7 p.m., Friday, July 22, 2005, in the chapel of Music Funeral Services with visitation beginning at 6 p.m. until service time. Per Mr. Kennedy’s request, he will be cremated following services.

Calvin Carral Rozier Jr.

QUITMAN — Calvin Carral Rozier Jr., 55, of Quitman passed away Monday, July 18, 2005, at the Brooks County Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in McIntosh County, he was the son of Calvin Carral Sr. and Jeannette Popple Rozier. He was a restaurant manager, a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam and a member of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Rozier of Quitman; one daughter, Wendy Marie Rozier of Columbia, S.C.; three sons, David Rozier of Birmingham, Ala., Calvin Austin Rozier and John David Rozier, both of Quitman; two grandchildren, Alexis and Michael; and six surviving sisters in Brunswick, Ga.

Evelyn Cook Sanders

SOUTH PASADENA, Fla. — Evelyn Cook Sanders, 84, died Monday, July 18, 2005, in South Pasadena, Fla. She was born in Blythe, Ga., and then grew up in Valdosta. She had resided in Gainesville since 1946.

She graduated from Georgia State College for Women in Valdosta with a B.S. degree in chemistry. She was employed by Glidden Paint Company, Valdosta.

She was an active member of The First United Methodist Church of Gainesville, where she was president of the Altar Guild as well as a member of the Cum Duble Sunday School and Church Circle No. 1.

She was an avid golfer, a member of the Women’s Golf Association at the Gainesville Golf and Country Club, where she held several offices. She also participated in the annual Senior Women’s Golf Tournament. She enjoyed membership in the Gainesville Woman’s Club and Gardenia Garden Circle. She also volunteered at Shands Teaching Hospital and Shands at Alachua General Hospital. She was active in community affairs and served on the Gainesville Advisory Board.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Richard C. Sanders Jr.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Alan Mencher; daughter, Pamela S. Helton, both of Gainesville; two grandchildren, Hillary H. Norris, Birmingham, Mich., and Blake D. Helton, Atlanta; and two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Faye C. Raney, Marietta, Ga., Virginia C. Bishop, St. Petersburg, Fla.; brother, John C. Cook Jr., Lake Park, Ga.; numerous nieces and nephews and beloved great-granddog, Chewie Helton, Gainesville; great-granddaughters, Lainie and Evie Norris.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday one hour prior to the funeral. Funeral services are at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 23, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church, 419 N.E. First St., Gainesville, Fla.

Robert S. Newman

Robert S. Newman, 67, of Adel passed away Wednesday at Memorial Hospital of Adel after a lengthy illness. Funeral service will be held Sunday, July 24, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Open Door Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary James and the Rev. John Hendley officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. No visitation will be conducted per the family’s request. — Purvis Funeral Home



Betty Roets

Betty Roets, 91, of Lenox died July 20, 2005, at her residence. Funeral services are at 4 p.m. Friday at Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Hendley officiating. Interment is at Marion Cemetery, Marion, N.Y. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of service Friday.
