GRIFFIN

Hallis E. ‘Hal’ Hewett

Mr. Hallis E. “Hal” Hewett, 74, of Griffin, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at Christian Ministries Hospice.

Mr. Hewett was born April 11, 1931, in Adel, son of the late Arlie Franklin and Lucy Mills Hewett. He was a member and former Deacon of Carver Road Baptist Church. He was retired from the University of Georgia. He was a dedicated volunteer at Atkinson Elementary School and received several awards for his dedication to education. He was awarded Employee of the year for the University of Georgia in 2004. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 5448. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Combat Infantryman’s Badge.

Survivors include his wife, BonnieViola Mercer Hewett of Griffin; children, Barbara and Jonathan Hilton of Jackson, Hallis E., Jr. “Chip” and Stacey Hewett also of Jackson; sister, Blanche Hewett and J.J. Ray of Valdosta; grandchildren, Sarah and Laura Cody, Michael and Matthew Hewett; great-grandson, Austin Jenkins; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Hallis E. “Hal” Hewett will be held Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at 11 a.m. in the Carver Road Baptist Church. The Rev. Tom Summers and David Walden will officiate. Interment will be private. Friends may visit the family this evening, Jan. 27, 2006, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Debra Barwick Clifton

Debra Barwick Clifton, 41 of Valdosta, died on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at Emory Crawford Long in Atlanta after a lengthy illness.

Born on June 22, 1964, in Thomasville, she was the daughter of Hardy Bruce Jr. and Doris Delita Wisenbaker Barwick of Valdosta. She was a certified nursing assistant and a member of Redland Church of Christ.

Other survivors are her sons, T.J. Parham, Jr. and Matt Parham both of Valdosta; sister, Brenda Holton of Valdosta; niece, Kelsey Holton of Valdosta; nephew, Dustin Holton of Valdosta; paternal grandfather, H. Bruce Barwick, Sr. of Valdosta; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Louis and Cuba Carter Wisenbaker and paternal grandmothers, Elsie B. Barwick and Lena C. Barwick.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. Greg Crews officiating. Burial will follow in Dasher Cemetery. VALDOSTA

Luther Roberts

Mr. Luther Roberts, 83, of Valdosta departed this life on Jan. 24, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center.

Luther was born on June 1, 1922, in Lowndes County to the late Mr. Willie Roberts and the late Mrs. Ida Greene. He attended the Lowndes County School system. He lived at 2301 Camden Circle in Valdosta. Luther retired in the U.S. Army and received several military honors. He was the owner of Roberts Pallets Service. He was an active member of Faith Deliverance Holiness Church. Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother, A.B. Roberts, one sister, Willie Mae Flintroy and one grandson, Cedric Lamar Stewart.

Survivors include his faithful and devoted wife for 62 years, Alma Smith Roberts. To this union 13 children were born; three sons, L.J. Roberts (Julia), George Roberts, Robert Roberts (Joan) all of Valdosta; 10 daughters; Arlene Gamble (Willie), Catherine Belcher, Mary Graham, Betty Johnson (Mark), Louise Roberts, Ethel Roberts Debro, all of Valdosta, Annie Mitchell (Ronnie), Clearwater, Fla., Deloris Roberts, Valdosta, Deblyn Davis (Lucius), Valdosta, Sharon Brookes (Travis), Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Dolly Brown, Jacksonville, Fla.; in-laws, Herbert Smith, Miami, Fla., Mary Roberts, Valdosta, Queen of Jacksonville, Fla.; a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at St. Paul AME Church where the Rev. Bruce Francis is pastor and Bishop Horace Brown will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. — Harrington Funeral Home.

Grace Sherrod Traynham

Grace Sherrod Traynham, 79, of Valdosta, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center.

She was born in Lowndes County on Aug. 11, 1926, and was raised in Echols County. Mrs. Traynham was a homemaker and a member of the Bridge Club.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Glenn Hatcher of Nicosia, Cyprus; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Louise Traynham of Haines City, Fla. and Jay and Chappell Traynham of Macon; six grandchildren, Zachary Hatcher, Jane Hatcher, Eleanor Traynham, Thomas C. Traynham, Thomas A. Traynham and Mark Traynham; one sister-in-law, Patricia LeBus-Mansfield of Wichita Falls, Texas; two nephews and their wives, Joe and Jan Rodgers and Sherrod and Debra Rodgers of Tifton. Mrs. Traynham was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Jane Sherrod, her husband, Jerry C. Traynham, Jr., and one sister, Marjorie Rodgers.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Hatcher and Elder Bob Dickerson officiating. Mamie Lee Williams

Mamie Lee Williams, 80, passed away Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center.

She was born in Lowndes County on Dec. 17, 1925, to the late Annie Mae Hardwick.

She retired after many years of service with Valdosta City Schools system as a lunchroom worker at S.L. Mason Elementary School. She was a member of Friendship Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Williams; one daughter, Doris Lee Hinton; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Reynolds, Gloria Wesley, and Sara Williams; two brothers-in-law, Herbert Williams and Palis Williams.

She is survived by two sons, Calvin Folsome (Diane, and Johnny Williams; one daughter, Annette W. Robinson (Troy); 13 grandchildren, Pam, Samantha, Nicole, Little Calvin, Kelvin, Adrian, Aeon, Aaron, Amber, Michael, Cornelius Jr., Selesia Young, and Marcus A. Williams; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Gene Reynolds and George Williams; five sisters-in-law, Kathryn Reynolds, Dot Robinson, Diane Howard, Jeanette Godwin and Alean McDonald; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.

Gladys Carter

Gladys Carter, 83, of West Berrien, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at Berrien County Hospital.

She was born on Feb. 2, 1922, in Berrien County to the late William Jasper and Annie Mae Sutton Browning.

She was a homemaker and retired marine upholsterer and Paraprofessional with the Berrien County school system and was a member of Vickers Church. She was the widow of Louis Everette Carter, who died in 1992.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Clarice (Billy) Roberts, Alapaha, Kathy (Roger) Connell, West Berrien, Janice (Bob) Roquemore, Lakeland; one son and daughter-in-law, Randall and Ruby Carter of West Berrien; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ethel Vickers, West Berrien, Vernice McNabb, Lakeland, Fla., Geneva Harper, West Berrien; and two brothers, Virgil Browning and Melvin Browning, both of West Berrien.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Regan Carter.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at Vickers Church with the Rev. Billy Roberts, the Rev. Stanley Roberts and the Rev. Ronnie Lawson officiating.
