Alan Dozier

Alan Dozier, 25, of Adel, died on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, from injuries sustained in an accident.

He was born in Hahira on Sept. 15, 1980, the son of Judy Carol Evans and William Ben Dozier Jr. Alan was employed with Truck Accessories of Valdosta and he greatly enjoyed racing go carts with his brothers and friends at Valdosta Carting Complex.

Survivors are his fiancee, Crystal Hall of Adel; a son, Jacob Dozier of Adel; his parents, Ben and Judy Dozier of Morven; brother, Ben Dozier of Adel; brother and sister-in-law, Matt and Deanna Dosier of Hahira, nieces and nephews, Maranda Dozier of Hahira, Tyler Dozier of Morven, Katie and Jordan Jones of Adel, Darrion Cameron, Dakota Blankenship and Garrett Rhodes of Valdosta; paternal grandmother, Rita Dozier of Valdosta, maternal grandmother, Ruby Baker of Hahira, maternal grandfather, C. W. Evans of Valdosta; special friends, Travis Norris and Mark Spells. Alan was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, William Ben Dozier Sr., father-in-law, Martin Hall, and brother, Christopher Dozier.

Ernestine Gibbs, 80, died July 17, 2006, at SE Health System Service Type.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 22, 2006, at 11 a.m. at First Friendship Baptist Church, 1010 Lee St. Pastor D. Williams will be officiating, with burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Folkston. Mrs. Ernestine Gibbs was a native of Folkston. She attended public school in Folkston. She moved to Brunswick and became a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Lyda Jean Hughes Bennett

Lyda Jean Hughes Bennett, 69, of Crawfordville, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at University Hospital in August.

Born Sept. 12, 1936, in Lowndes County, Mrs. Hughes was the daughter of the late John Hughes and the late Mary Helen Green Ellington. She was a homemaker, a member of Sardis Baptist Church and founder of Christmas in Dixie, which was held each season from 1982 to 1997 in Crawfordville.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by her husband, Earl W. Bennett of Crawfordville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Emily and June Rutherford of Crawfordville and Judy Gentry and David Skinner of Crawfordville; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Steve Bennett of Valdosta, Joe Bennett of Madison, Greg and Shirley Bennett of Fort Valley, and Ken and Hope Bennett of Madison; two sisters, Leona Stanley of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mary Ruth Weaver of Orlando, Fla.; four brothers, John W. Hughes of Live Oak, Fla., George W. Hughes of Nashville, Bennie Ellington of Milledgeville, and Bill Ellington of Crawfordville; and 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Felton Lewis Allen II

On Aug. 27, 1983, God blessed with the birth of a little boy, Felton Lewis Allen II. His parents along with their families were filled with happiness. Papa, as he was affectionately called, would be “all boy.” He enjoyed a childhood filled with love and family devotion. Often times he and his cousins would debate about who was the favorite child, and of course Papa thought he was. Certainly he was the pride and joy of his grandmothers and most times had both of them “wrapped around his finger.” His grandfathers, Clyde Allen and W.C. McCloud, preceded him in death.

Felton II attended public schools in Hamilton County where he was active in sports, noted as the best dressed boy, and he was a friend to all.

His family realized that Felton’s Christian education was as important as any other, and they became members of Mount Olive Baptist Church. On April 30, 1993, he was baptized at Mount Olive Baptist Church by Rev. Francis. Felton was active in the Youth Department as a faithful member of the Sunday school and the Youth Choir.

Felton departed this life on Sunday morning, July 16, 2006.

Dale A. Bennett

Dale A. Bennett, 47 of Howell, died on Saturday, July 15, 2006, in Jasper, Fla., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born on Nov. 18, 1958, in Bass, Maine, he was the son of Mary Frances Short Bennett and the late William Edward Bennett Jr. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors are his wife, Patricia Diane Phillips Bennett of Howell; sons, William Travis Bennett of Illinois; son, Trinity Aaron Bennett of Valdosta; daughter, Anna Marie Bennett of Lake Park; son, William Edward Bennett, III of Howell and daughter, Constance Dale Bennett also of Howell; 7 grandchildren; his mother, Mary Frances Short Bennett and two brothers, Michael Bennett and David Bennett, all of West Virginia.

Harold D. Atkins

Mr. Harold D. Atkins, 56, of Lawrenceville, passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2006.

Mr. Atkins was born on Aug. 9, 1949, in Lowndes County. He was a 1967 graduate of Lowndes County High School, where he was the team captain of the high school football team. He was a supervisor at Jefferson Smurfit Company in Stone Mountain. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a “Super Dad” and grandfather. Lillian Lucille Morris

Lillian Lucille Morris, 85, of Nashville died Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at his residence.

Born Oct. 17, 1920, in Ware County, she was the daughter of Elmer W. Futch and Zuma Thigpen, both of whom preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a member of Assembly of God. She was the widow of James Raymond Morris, who died in 2001.

Survivors are four daughters, Jeanette Barnes, Perrine, Fla., Betty Rusk, Naples, Fla., Joyce Sylvia, Leesburg, Fla., Donna Morris, Eullis, Texas; a son, Danny Morris, Adel; five sisters, Vivian King, Bartow, Fla., Marion Sylvia, Sebastian, Fla., Jeanne Solt, Pinecrest, Fla., Esther Shepard, Gainesville, Carolyn Koons, Miami Lakes, Fla.; three brothers, Hugh Futch, Merritt Island, Fla., James Futch, Phoenix, Ariz., Carl Futch, San Pedro, Costa Rica; and 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James R. “Bud” Morris, who died in 2002, and a grandson.

Edna Lenora Burkhalter

Edna Lenora Burkhalter, 88, of Valdosta, passed away Tuesday July 18, 2006, in South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Burkhalter was born June 18, 1918, in Toombs County to Eddie and Irene (Keel) Parker. She lived in Valdosta for most of her life and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Her husband, Ancil Burkhalter, and sister, Ailene Tomlinson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include: five daughters and son-in-law, Linda and Robert Fletcher of Valdosta, Betty Frazier of Valdosta, Barbara and P.J. Daniels of Valdosta, Nancy King of Naylor, and Kay and Ricky Carter of Valdosta; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Roy Harris of Valdosta; brother and sister-in-law, Philmore and Louise Parker of Prosperity, S.C.; and friend and caregiver Joann Pryor of Valdosta.

Leslie (Papa) Roe Davis Sr.

Leslie (Papa) Roe Davis Sr., 90, of Valdosta, died on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at his residence after a lengthy illness. Born on February 4, 1916, in Mobile, Ala., he was the son of the late Henry Taylor and Ida Irene Davis. Mr. Davis was a self-employed jeweler for 39 years and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. From 1955 to 1960, he served two terms on the Valdosta City Council and was president of the Boys Club in 1960. He loved his family, had many friends and was an avid golfer, gardener and fisherman. He was fondly known as “Paw Paw,” “Papa” and “Papa D.” He was a member of Northside Baptist church.

Survivors are his wife, Mary Helen Davis of Valdosta; children, Leslie R., Jr. and Margie Davis, Charles E. Dorothy Morgan Mackey

Dorothy Morgan Mackey, of Valdosta, died on Thursday, July 20, 2006, at her home. Born in Metter, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Kate Eubanks Morgan. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Mackey was involved in numerous civic and cultural activities throughout her life.

Survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Jimmy Dewar of Valdosta, her sons and daughters-in-law, Mac and Susan Mackey of Valdosta, William and Pam Mackey of Valdosta; grandchildren, Lee and Brandi Mackey, Elizabeth and Jonathan Burns, Mary Catherine Mackey, Jackie and Mary Oliver and Maxwell Oliver all of Valdosta; four great grandchildren, Mac and Morgan Mackey, Howell and Berkley Burns of Valdosta; her sister, Eleanor Howard of Valdosta. She was preceded in death by her husband, Berkley Mackey and a sister, Ruthie Sherman.

Mary Willis-Summers

Mary was born to the late Joshua and Essie Mae Goins on Oct. 10, 1915, in Sumter, S.C. To this union seven children were born and upon the death of her mother, she and her siblings were raised by their father Joshua and stepmother Mada. Three more siblings were added to the family upon this union. All nine of her siblings preceded her in death.

She was educated in Sumter, S.C., and the Georgia public school systems. She lived in Valdosta most of her life. She was employed by the Valdosta school system and a contract cleaning company until she retired.

Mary was united in holy matrimony to the late Robert L. Willis and to this union 10 children were born. Upon the death of her husband she later married Willie Summers who also preceded her in death. One son, Eugene Willis, and his wife Louise Willis also preceded her in death.

Mary received Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She served faithfully on the Usher Board until her health began to fail.

She leaves to mourn her passing five daughters, Mary Moten (Hardy) and Mae Francis Dykes of Valdosta, Teresa Howard of Cleveland, Ohio, Carnetha Breedlove (Adriane) of Stone Mountain, and Diane Willis-McMillan (Samuel) of Tampa, Fla.; four sons, Lewis Willis (Louise) and Alphonso Willis of Valdosta, Verlyn Willis Sr. (Lois) and Theardis Willis (Valerie) of Atlanta; a devoted sister-in-law, Inez Goins of Sylvester; 47 grandchildren, 88 great-grandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Justin ‘Bubba’ Vickers

Justin “Bubba” Vickers, 23, of Valdosta, passed away the evening of Wednesday, July 19, 2006, after sustaining injuries in a motorcycle accident.

Justin was born on Sept. 5, 1982, in Lowndes County to Jackie Vickers of Iron City and Kay Luke Register of Valdosta. He was employed by The Scruggs Company and was Baptist by faith. He enjoyed playing basketball with his younger brother Taylor and spending time with the light of his world, Ansley. Justin always enjoyed anything that pertains to cars. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, W.H. Vickers and Betty Jo Johnson.
