The man originally thought to be the victim in an armed robbery has been arrested as an accomplice in the crime, according to Live Oak police. Gary O. Lambright, 24, of 107 Lee Avenue Lot 4, was taken into custody shortly after noon on Tuesday, according to Det. Sgt. Ron Shaw of the Live Oak Police Department. A second suspect, the alleged gunman, is still sought in connection with the crime.
LOPD was dispatched to a Lee Avenue address in reference to a possible robbery around 3 p.m. Sunday.
The robber approached Lambright in the backyard of a home, pointed a gun at him “and demanded he go back into the house,” an LOPD report said.
Shaw said that once inside the home, Lambright was forced into a bedroom with the home’s other occupants. The suspect took cash and the prescription drug Xanax, Shaw said.
However, what was first thought to be a simple robbery turned out to be an elaborate plan to steal prescription medication, says Shaw.
Shaw said the primary resident of the Lee Avenue residence has a bulldog that “would tear you up that usually stayed on the back porch, but it happened to be on the front porch locked inside a screened porch at the time.”
Shaw said Lambright walked out onto the back porch, gave a signal of some kind and “up popped” an armed man out of the bushes.
He led Lambright into the home and into a bedroom where the other occupants were.
“He knew where to go,” said Shaw.
Once in the bedroom, the robber said “give me the pills, give me the pills,” according to Shaw.
The Xanax was prescribed to an occupant of the home and was locked in a portable home safe. Shaw said the robber took the safe and fled the scene. He said two prescription medication bottles were inside the safe – one was empty and the other contained 70 pills.
Shaw said the robber and Lambright met later to divvy up the pills.
Lambright was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, tampering with evidence and intent to sell marijuana. Shaw said Lambright hid the semi-automatic pistol used in the robbery, along with ammunition and marijuana, inside a teddy bear that he concealed outside the home.
Lambright may face additional charges, Shaw said.
The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Justin Bates at the Live Oak Police Department at 386-362-7463 ext 224.
