Hugh M. Smith
Sept. 19, 1922 – Nov. 6, 2014
Hugh M. Smith, 92, of Day, Fla. passed away on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014. Mr. Smith was a native of Day, born to Madison and Vennie Smith.
Mr. Smith lived in Arlington, Va and Decatur, Ga before he moved to Gainesville, Fla. in 1977 after retiring. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and Korea honorably discharging with the rank of Colonel. Hugh worked for the Department of Agriculture and the Internal Revenue Service. He was heavily involved with the Masons, Shriners, American Legion and the Lafayette County Historical Society. Mr. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church, Gainesville, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Betty Smith.
Hugh is survived by one daughter: Cheri (Jim) Demmers, Decatur, GA; four sons: Eric (Patty) Smith, Day, Fla.; Larry (Sandy) Smith, Hampton, GA; Curtis (Lindy) Smith, Lawrencecille, GA; David Smith, Lake Mary, Fla.; two sisters: Elouise Green, Day, Fla.; Helen (Clark) Hingson, Live Oak, Fla.; two brothers: Harold Smith, Day, Fla.; Waymon (Joan) Smith, Day, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 2014 at Brewer Lake Baptist Church, Day, Fla. with Pastor Robert Bradow officiating. Visitation was from 10 – 11 a.m. before the service. Interment followed in Day Cemetery.

Walter C. Hughes

Walter C. Hughes, 81, of Branford, Fla. passed away on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014 at his home. The Fargo, GA native lived over 40 years of his life in Branford and worked as a chemical salesman. Walter was a member of Midway Baptist Church.
Walter was preceded in death by his loving wife: Betsey Hughes; parents: Walter and Catherine Hughes; three brothers: George ‘Buck’ Hughes, Ray Hughes, and Harry Hughes.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his daughter: Dawn (Danny) Rogers, Branford, Fla.; two sons: Dane Hughes, Lakeland, Fla. and Drew Hughes, Branford, Fla.; an adopted son: Kevin Sullivan, Mayo, Fla.; one sister: Mary Fudge, DeBarry, Fla.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A visitation was held from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2014 at Daniels Funeral Home, Branford, Fla.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014 at Midway Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Rogers officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
