QUITMAN — Kindergartener Kaylin Clemons from Quitman Elementary School won the “My Farm and Working Forest” student artwork contest sponsored by Raisin’ Cane.
Kaylin and her teacher, Carol Matthews, were recognized for the original artwork at QES in front of the entire school. The artwork was based on student’s educational field trip experiences at Raisin’ Cane, a produce market and agritourism business located in Lowndes County.

The “My Farm and Working Forest” artwork contest is for pre-K through fifth grade. Its aim is to illustrate the value of farms and working forests in both Georgia and Florida through artwork. The winner’s artwork will be displayed throughout the community.
Each winning entry is awarded a prize, including $250 for each winning student, $1,000 award to each teacher of a winning student, and an opportunity to attend the Annual Georgia Teacher Conservation Workshop.
Raisin’ Cane hosted the contest for student field trips sponsored by the Harley Langdale Jr. Foundation. The goal of Raisin’ Cane is for all who come to get an agricultural experience by touring a real working farm and get hands-on learning on how food is transformed from seed to the kitchen table.
“Kaylin was able to capture a few of the different stations on our trip,” Matthews said. “Near the top of the picture is her rendition of the corn maze. She really enjoyed her trip.”
Kaylin and Matthews will be recognized at the monthly Brooks County Board of Education meeting in February.
