Britain’s Brexit to be focus of talk

DALTON, Ga. — Britain’s Brexit is to be discussed at the Huff House in Dalton on Tuesday, July 19, at 6:30 p.m. Jan Pourquoi, a native of Belgium, economist and business owner in Dalton, will present topics such as the origin of the European Union, why did Britain get out and how will this new decentralization affect our lives. The event is sponsored by the Dalton Tea Party. Everyone is welcome.

 

Sports Hall of Fame accepting nominations

THOMASVILLE, Ga. — The Thomasville-Thomas County Sports Hall of Fame is accepting nominations for the class of 2016.  Eligible candidates include athletes, coaches, referees, trainers or other people who have made exceptional contributions to sports and who have lived a lifestyle as a positive role model. Nominees must be at least 40 years of age. Nomination forms are available at the YMCA or online at www.thomasshof.org. The deadline for nominations is Aug. 5. Florida author book signing at Suwannee library

LIVE OAK, Fla.  — Local author Johnny Bullard will be at the Suwannee River Regional Library on Thursday, July 14 from 6-8 p.m. signing copies of his books “Nightshade” and “Secrets.”   Johnny Bullard is a native of White Springs, Florida, a small town of less than one thousand inhabitants located on the banks of the historic Suwannee River. His family has lived in the area for seven generations. Growing up in a family of great storytellers, Johnny loved hearing family stories told as folks rocked on front porches, as well as those whispered on screened porches and around dinner tables. A graduate of Valdosta State University, where he received four college degrees including a B.A. in English, Johnny has spent his life as an educator, public servant, singer/songwriter, and writer/journalist. “Nightshade” is his first published novel and the long awaited sequel “Secrets” will be featured in selected readings Thursday night. ‘The Avengers’ to be shown on outdoor screen

LAKE PARK, Fla. — The Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority will be airing “The Avengers” in Lake Park on Friday.  The event will be free and requires no registration, according to a press release. The movie will be aired on the VLPRA’s 11-foot tall and 20-feet wide, inflatable screen, according to the release.  “The Avengers” is rated PG-13 and the VLPRA encourages residents to visit the Motion Picture Association of America’s website at www.mpaa.org to ensure the movie is appropriate for their children. The VLPRA plans to show three more movies this year. The next movie will be “Hotel Transylvania” in October. Limited concessions will be available for purchase in cash from the VLPRA, but residents can bring their own food. The movie will be played at the South Lowndes Recreation Complex, 6440 Ocean Pond Road, at 8:30 p.m.
