JASPER — Monique Bryant, Alisha Lewis and Kelsionna Fudge combined for 49 points on Saturday as the Hamilton County girls basketball team defeated Suwannee 58-20.

Bryant, a senior point guard, led all scorers with 22 points. She helped HCHS start the game on a 31-9 run and get the large crowd involved early.

There were over 1,000 fans in attendance for the rivalry game.

“Our kids don’t want to lose to Suwannee,” HCHS coach Greg Taylor said. “The rivalry is a real big thing for the area.”

Suwannee’s Jasmine Jones had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jones took advantage of her height, scoring most of her points close to the basket.

She didn’t get many opportunities though. Hamilton’s swarming defense forced many steals before Suwannee had a chance to get its offense set.

Bryant had five steals. Fudge picked up six steals and scored 13 points.

Suwannee JV coach Elane Owens was on the sideline for Saturday’s game. She stepped in for varsity coach Brian Bullock, who was out of town for the weekend.

“I do believe our girls are capable of winning a game like this,” Owens said. “We just have to continue to play together.”

HCHS in now 4-2. Hamilton travels to Mayo tonight for a 6:30 p.m. game against Lafayette. Suwannee (0-6) travels to Rickards High tonight for a 7:30 p.m. game.
