- Wolverine: Prehistory
If the movie “Logan” left viewers wanting more of the character also called Wolverine, “Wolverine: Prehistory” presents several unexpected tales from the X-Man’s storied career.
Specifically, the majority of the stories collected here are tales prior to Logan becoming a steel-laced, steel-clawed Weapon X.
With his mutant healing factor, Wolverine’s life spanned centuries. There are stories from pioneer days, World War II, the Cold War and other eras.
Being a thick collection of stories published at various times through the years, there are numerous creators involved. Some stories are much better than others.
He encounters Nick Fury before the eyepatch, Ben Grimm prior to becoming the Thing, Carol Danvers before becoming Captain Marvel.
One of the best stories is “Prisoner Number Zero,” a Mark Millar-Kaare Andrews World War II tale where Logan is a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp. Logan never speaks, his face is cast in shadow, which all contributes to the powerful tale by Millar and Andrews.
Other ventures are more disappointing. One of the most disappointing is the inclusion of five issues from “The First X-Men” series. Here, Wolverine and Sabretooth form a group of mutants prior to Professor Charles Xavier first forming a team. Comics legend Neal Adams is the primary creator. Adams worked on the original X-Men title nearly 50 years ago. His art is great here but the storytelling and characterization are weak.
“Wolverine: Prehistory” is a mixed bag but the good outweighs the bad.
